East Aurora High School

Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)

The East Aurora School District 131 Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) was established in 1996. The initial enrollment was approximately 150 students. As of the 2016-2017 school year, there are 625 students enrolled, making it the largest NJROTC program in the country.

East Aurora NJROTC has been recognized as a Distinguished Unit (one of the top units in Area 3) for 15 consecutive years, in the 2015/2016 school year earning the Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors title. In 2012, the Marksmanship Rifle Team finished first and seventh place in the SECNAV Air Rifle Competition as well as fifth and 10th place in the NJROTC Championships in Anniston, Alabama. At the NJROTC Championships, 2013 graduate Matthew Miller was the individual Navy National Champion. East Aurora NJROTC’s drill team qualified for Navy Nationals in the 2016/2017 school year. The team finished third in the Armed Exhibition. The team currently competes at the Masters level drill when competing in Daytona, Florida.

East Aurora NJROTC cadets perform approximately 16,000 hours of community service each year and participate in dozens of community and school volunteer service events. These events include: Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Fiesta Patrias parades, Los Posada celebration, East Aurora High School Fine Arts Festival, Open House and Navy Night Football, Basketball and Soccer games. We are also active in the Illinois Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway Program and nursing home visits, We have also had the opportunity to have our Color Guards open the Chicago Bulls basketball game and the Chicago Bears football games as well as numerous high profile Color Guards performances throughout the year.

Over the past year we have partnered with the Kane County Sheriff Department to start the Junior Deputy Program, a program designed to introduce our cadets to the various aspects of law enforcement as well as bridge the gap between law enforcement and communities. Last year Kane County awarded a 2 year Waubonsee scholarship to one of our seniors that participated in the program. This year we have increased enrollment and we hope more seniors will earn scholarships.

East Aurora NJROTC cadets have the opportunity to participate on one or more of our seven teams: Academic, Color Guard, Drill, Dance, Drum & Bugle Corps, Marksmanship Rifle, Orienteering, and Physical Fitness. The cadets compete and perform throughout the school year against various schools across the country. They earn ribbons, medals and trophies for participating. East Aurora’s NJROTC hosts the following events: Drill Meet, Orienteering Meet, Physical Training Competition, Orienteering Meet, Academic Postal and Brain Brawl, and Marksmanship Competition, and Basic Leadership Training, resulting in our Unit being one of the best and most active in Area 3.
