Board Bits is a new informational initiative designed to keep everyone informed as to what is happening with the Board of Education and throughout the district. The Board of Education has meetings on the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month. We understand that everyone cannot always attend the meetings, so we will issue Board Bits to provide a brief synopsis of each meeting.

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
• Elementary Music Curriculum
The Elementary Schools rolled out a new Music Curriculum (See Boardbook on d131.org)
• Summer School
This year saw the first IPAD Enrichment training and the Magnet/Gifted programs along with many other programs that enriched student learning. The District also partnered with Community in Schools to provide afternoon programs at all Elementary Schools. Also, new are the sports camps in Basketball and Softball at the elementary level taking place later this summer. This summer serviced over 2800 students. The cost for these programs in D131 was $800,000 since the State cut all payments on Summer School.
• Bilingual Update
Please take time to read the updated changes to the Bilingual Program. This has presented a big paradigm shift in instruction. (See Boardbook on d131.org)
• RTI Update
Updates were presented on the RTI Interventions. We are forming new committees to better streamline the program with PBIS. (See Boardbook on d131.org)
BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE
The District supported $3.5 million in much needed infrastructure repairs to many building this summer. With the bad economy, we have been able to do a variety of repairs. (See Boardbook on d131.org)
FINANCE AND PERSONNEL COMMITTEE
• Approved the adoption of new text book series for Science grades K to 8 and ESL Science grades K to 8
• Approved the purchase of the Fred Rodgers Center for our Magnet Academy. This will service at the onset in 2013/2014 school year 450 students. The program provides a focus on Math/Science/Technology and has provided great results. It also helps with over-crowding across all buildings from 3rd to 8th grade. The taxpayers also win because they will have a new school for a low cost.
• The District appointed Suzanne Bement-Withrow as Assistant Director of Student Services. She fills the retirement of Jan Kutter and had been in our District as Special Education Coordinator since 2006.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
