East High wrestler Matt Young has qualified for the IHSA state wrestling tournament and will compete for a state title this Thursday in Champaign.
Young competed in the IHSA Sectionals at Downers Grove North High School this past weekend, competing in the 160lb weight class. After going 1-1 Friday night, Matt needed to win three straight matches today to qualify for the IHSA state finals.
On Saturday, Young won his first match of the morning by technical fall, winning 16-0. In his second match of the day, he won by pinning the wrestler from Batavia in the 3rd period. Then in his third match of the day, needing a win to qualify for state, Matt won a hard-fought match against a wrestler from Hinsdale Central 9-2 to qualify for state.
His day was not over, however as he then went on to take 3rd place at the sectional by pinning the St. Rita wrestler in the 1st period.
Matt Young was featured in a district video and will be honored by teachers and staff during a “Walk of Champions” at the high school Wednesday afternoon.
