For the first time in seven years, East Aurora NJROTC has won the Area 3 Competition at Great Lakes Naval Station.
The Tomcats participated in a two-day competition February 24 and 25 against 14 other schools. Competitions were held in physical training, academics and drill, at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL.
Schools could earn a maximum of 5,190 points, and East Aurora’s NJROTC came in first place with 4,997 points. Second place went to Harding High School (St Paul, MN), who earned 4,683 points. Third place was awarded to Papillion-La Vista South High School (Papillion, NE), with 4,544 points.
Many Tomcats excelled at the competition, including standout freshman Timothy Gehler, who earned 4th place in individual Academics among 130 students.
“The hard work and commitment of the East Aurora NJROTC Unit paid off this past weekend,” said Lieutenant Lauren Carthan. “From our students, our staff, to all our parents and boosters, the true character of East Aurora was on full display. I am so proud.”
As Area 3 West 2017 Champions, the Tomcats have earned the right to compete against at least 25-30 schools in the Navy National NJROTC competition held in Pensacola, FL on April 7 and 8. At the national competition, teams can win individual events, and the team with the highest point total will be the Navy National NJROTC Champion.
