East Aurora District 131 is very fortunate to have dedicated teachers like Eliseo Martinez and Nancy Griffin.

These Bardwell School teachers, with the help of a mini-grant from the Aurora East Educational Foundation, are guiding a group of about 50 kids (third, fourth, and fifth graders) in rehearsals for the musical play “Pirates!”

Eliseo and Nancy have supervised the kids as they prepare for three performances on May 11. The students and teachers have been working since January, and their work has been entirely on their own time as it is an extra-curricular activity. “We practice two times a week, and also at home,” said Karma Gomez, who is playing the role of the ‘Pirate Queen.’ “It’s cool that I get to act sassy as the Pirate Queen. Our teachers are funny and nice. We learn that we have to be very dramatic and express our feelings.”

Eliseo mentioned that the AEEF grant has helped in several ways.

“Just to get the rights for the show is expensive,” he said. “The grant also allowed us to get shirts for the kids, and they will be worn at the Fine Arts Festival.

“I don’t like the idea of the kids having to pay to do something. They won’t be able to participate in a lot of things if they have to do that. The idea is to try to get rid of the pressure to have to pay for an activity.”

Nancy is able to see many benefits for the kids who are participating in this extra-curricular drama endeavor.

“It leads to fluency, articulation, and confidence, and it connects to the classroom too,” she said. “When they learn a work ethic, it follows through.

“They learn that they have to work WITH someone—it’s not a solo act, but teamwork. We really push teamwork, working together, and supporting each other.”

Eliseo and Nancy again mentioned gratitude to the AEEF.

“We are incredibly thankful to the AEEF,” Eliseo said. “This is maybe the seventh or eighth project they have funded for me, and every single time we are so grateful.”

“I’ve had other projects the AEEF has helped,” added Nancy. “It provides so many opportunities and experiences for kids that they wouldn’t necessarily get.”
