Understanding Our Schools Through Data

Each year, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) publishes the Illinois Report Card to provide families, educators, and community members with information about public schools and school districts across Illinois.

The Report Card provides a broad picture of our schools, including information about student learning and growth, graduation, attendance, school environment, students, educators, and other indicators of school performance.

At East Aurora School District 131, we use this information as one source of evidence to understand where our students and schools are succeeding, where we have opportunities to grow, and how we can continue to improve.

A Note About The 2024–2025 Data

The 2024–2025 Report Card includes several important changes to Illinois assessment reporting.

Beginning With The 2025 Report Card, ISBE Introduced New, Research-Informed Performance Levels And Proficiency Benchmarks For The Illinois Assessment Of Readiness (IAR), Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), And ACT. These Changes Were Designed To Better Align Illinois' Definition Of Proficiency With Grade-Level Learning Expectations And College And Career Readiness.

Because the proficiency benchmarks changed, 2025 proficiency results should not be directly compared with proficiency rates from previous years. The change resets the longitudinal trend for general assessments. Student Growth Percentiles remain a useful measure of student progress because they are calculated using scale scores rather than proficiency benchmarks.

For this reason, we encourage families and community members to look at multiple measures when interpreting student and school performance rather than relying on a single score or designation.

Looking Beyond a Single Number

The Illinois Report Card is an important source of information, but it is only one part of the story of our schools.

Student learning and growth are influenced by many factors, and no single assessment, percentage, or designation can fully capture the experiences and accomplishments of our students and educators.

We use Report Card data alongside classroom evidence, local assessments, student and family voice, school climate information, graduation and postsecondary data, and other sources of evidence to guide continuous improvement.

Our goal is not simply to report data. Our goal is to understand it, learn from it, and use it to make our schools stronger for every student.
