Substitute Teaching Requirements and Application Process

Requirements for Substitute teachers

To be a Substitute Teacher in our district:

• Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or a paraprofessional license with a bachelor’s degree on-file with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), or hold an Associate’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or show completion of 60 semester hours of coursework.
• Must hold the appropriate Illinois state licensure and be registered in Kane County. Licensing and registration can be completed through the Kane County Regional Office of Education (ROE) in Geneva, IL.
• Substitute licenses are valid for 5 years, and must be renewed every 5 years to remain valid.

Please be sure to complete the registration process for Kane County as you must be properly registered in the county you plan to work within the State of Illinois.

Application Process

All Substitute Teacher applicants must complete an online application via the Employment webpage by clicking HERE.

• All Substitute Teacher applicants are subject to reference checks. A minimum of THREE references are required on your application, with at least one of them being a supervisor/manager or someone that has evaluated you in the past.
• Please provide accurate contact information for your professional references, including a current email address and phone number(s).
• You are welcome to upload relevant documents to your online application such as college transcripts, reference letters, and resumes.
• Once your references are completed, Human Resources (HR) will contact you for an appointment to fill out the appropriate paperwork. During this time you will be asked to provide acceptable identification to complete the Form I-9 and complete your onboarding documents.
• Once you have received your intake/onboarding appointment with District 131, Substitute Teacher applicants will be required to complete fingerprinting at the Kane County ROE. This should be done on your own time once you receive your intake/onboarding appointment. You are responsible for fingerprint payment. When scheduling your appointment, please inform the ROE to send the results to District 131.

Substitute Teachers

Short-Term Substitute Teachers

We have an additional opportunity for hiring substitutes who have an associate’s degree or at least 60 semester hours of coursework. Short-term substitutes provide the district with a larger pool of substitutes, when this nonrenewable license expires.  

To work as a short term substitute teacher, the applicant must:

• hold an associate degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university or at least 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university required.
• Must complete a district training prior to employment
• Application and $25 application fee required
