As we continue our efforts to become more involved and relevant in offering opportunities for many of the students in East Aurora School District 131, the Aurora East Educational Foundation would like to thank and salute all of our generous donors.  We would be able to accomplish nothing without them and their generous spirit.

During the #ILGIVE campaign last fall, we received a generous gift from Margie and Rich Fazio of Naperville, and they followed that with another donation to Bardwell School and the Benavides STEAM Academy.

They visited the STEAM Academy recently, and later, we had a conversation with them regarding their desire to help the kids of the East Side. Although Margie lived in Boulder Hill for much of her youth, she did live on Smith St. and attended Gates School for first and second grade.

She spent a “ton” of time on the East Side as her grandparents, aunts, and uncles continued to live in the Pigeon Hill area.  She still has some family on the East Side. “I developed a loyalty to Aurora because of my relatives and from coming downtown to shop and go to the banks,” she said.  “I’m really impressed with the initiatives like the Paramount, and we try to get to Aurora when we can.” 

Margie met Rich when they were students at NIU, and they graduated from there in 1987.  Margie does freelance graphic design and illustration, and Rich is a software architect manager.

We asked them about their motivation in supporting the AEEF. “Over the years, we’ve supported many organizations,” Rich said.  “As we looked at how charities were being run on a global scale, the amounts going in and the amounts being used to help people didn’t seem very equitable.  We made a ‘mental shift’ in what we wanted to do.

“There are a lot of people really close to home who are very much in need as well.  Focusing locally, we could help people break out of patterns caused by a lack of resources.

“I see the Benavides STEAM Academy, and it blows me away.  It’s something I wish every kid on the planet could have access to.  A lot of the kids in it are those that really need it.  Supporting it just seems to feel really right.”

Margie shared similar thoughts, especially about the STEAM Academy. “A lot of the resources there we have seen in larger schools in New York and San Francisco,” she said.  “We loved seeing it here on the local level—kids learning coding and stop motion animation. 

“We both believe in helping at the local level.  It’s more important sometimes than trying to help the entire world.”

The Fazios would like to see more scholarships for kids going to college or trade schools, and also to see opportunities for “career pathing” starting early on—in elementary school and continuing.

As a first generation Latina, Margie had a special view regarding our East Side students. “I saw a lot of myself when we visited the academy,” she said.  “I understand where many students may be coming from, having a foot in both worlds.  Sometimes kids need the encouragement and to see what’s possible.

“We hope to encourage others who may have lived on the East Side at one time to think back and realize that there is still a need in the community and also encourage current students to come back some day and contribute to the community.”

The AEEF would like to thank Margie and Rich for their vision and for their generosity.  We are grateful and hope that their story can inspire others to help in our mission.

Mientras continuamos nuestros esfuerzos para ser más involucrados y relevantes en la oferta de oportunidades para muchos de los estudiantes en el Distrito escolar 131 del Este de Aurora; la Fundación Educativa del Este de Aurora quisiera agradecer y saludar a todos nuestros generosos donantes. No podríamos lograr nada sin ellos y su espíritu generoso.

Durante la campaña #ILGIVE (Dar Illinois) del otoño pasado, recibimos un generoso regalo de Margie y Rich Fazio de Naperville, además de otras donaciones a la escuela Bardwell y a  Benavides STEAM Academy.

Recientemente visitaron la academia STEAM y después, tuvimos una conversación con ellos sobre su deseo de ayudar a los niños del lado este de Aurora.

Aunque Margie vivió en Boulder Hill durante la mayor parte de su juventud, también vivió en la calle de Smith St. y para el primer y segundo grado, asistió a la escuela Gates.

Pasó mucho tiempo en el lado este, ya que sus abuelos, tías y tíos seguían viviendo en la zona de Pigeon Hill. Todavía tiene algunos familiares en el lado este.

“Desarrollé una lealtad a Aurora debido a mis familiares, visitar al centro para ir de compras y a los bancos”, dijo ella. “Me impresionan mucho las iniciativas como el teatro Paramount y tratamos de ir a Aurora cuando podemos”.

Margie conoció a Rich cuando eran estudiantes en NIU y se graduaron allí en 1987. Margie se dedica al diseño gráfico y la ilustración por cuenta propia y Rich es gerente de arquitectura de software.

Les preguntamos por su motivación para apoyar a la AEEF. “Con los años, hemos apoyado a muchas organizaciones”, dijo Rich. “Cuando observamos cómo se gestionaban las organizaciones de caridad a un nivel global, las cantidades que entraban y las que se utilizaban para ayudar a la gente no parecían muy equivalentes. Hicimos un ‘cambio mental’ en lo que queríamos hacer”.

“Hay mucha gente muy cerca de casa que también necesita ayuda. Centrándonos en el ámbito local, podríamos ayudar a la gente a salir de los patrones causados por la falta de recursos.

“Veo la escuela de Benavides STEAM Academy y me deja sin palabras. Es algo a lo que me gustaría que todos los niños del planeta tuvieran acceso. Muchos de los niños que están allí son los que realmente lo necesitan. Apoyar a la academia me parece lo más adecuado”.

Margie compartió pensamientos similares, especialmente sobre la academia STEAM. “Muchos de los recursos que hay allí los hemos visto en escuelas más grandes de Nueva York y San Francisco”, dijo. “Nos encantó verlo aquí a nivel local: niños aprendiendo codificación y animación en stop motion (animación donde la cámara tiene que parar grabando y empezar de nuevo y se repite).

“Ambos creemos en la ayuda a nivel local.  A veces es más importante que intentar ayudar al mundo entero”.

A los Fazio les gustaría ver más becas para los niños que van a la universidad o a las escuelas de oficios y también ver oportunidades para la “trayectoria de la carrera profesional” empezando temprano en la escuela primaria y continuando.

Cómo latina de primera generación, Margie tenía una visión especial con respecto a nuestros estudiantes del lado este.

“Vi mucho de mí misma cuando visitamos la academia”, dijo. “Entiendo de dónde pueden venir muchos estudiantes, al tener un pie en dos culturas. A veces los chicos necesitan el estímulo y ver lo que es posible”.

“Esperamos animar a otros que hayan vivido en el lado este en algún momento a pensar en el pasado y darse cuenta de que todavía hay una necesidad en la comunidad y también animar a los estudiantes de hoy a volver algún día y contribuir a la comunidad.”

La AEEF quiere agradecer a Margie y Rich por su visión y su generosidad. Estamos agradecidos y esperamos que su historia pueda inspirar a otros a ayudar en nuestra misión.
