Celebrating the HBCU Experience as part of Black History MonthCelebrando la experiencia HBCU como parte del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana

There are over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the United States. Despite representing only 3% of the college options available to graduating High School students, HBCUs graduate nearly 20% of all African American students and 25% of African American students in the STEM fields in any given year. HBCUs offer incredible opportunities for all students of all cultural backgrounds seeking a diverse and comprehensive post-secondary educational experience. HBCUs are also able to provide this access and opportunity to students at a much lower price point than other institutions, costing on average 26% less than other American colleges and universities.

East Aurora High School values and celebrates its’s diversity as a school, district, and community. Living its emphasis on College and Career for All, in keeping with the district-wide celebration of Black History Month, East Aurora High School will be hosting two upcoming events highlighting the benefits of an HBCU student experience. On Monday, February 26, EAHS will be hosting an alumni panel with representatives from HBCU Greek Life. The schedule will be as follows:

Monday, 02/26, Tomcat College & Career Center, Lunch Hours

  • 3rd Hour – 10:25-11:17 – Ms. Stewart, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Johnson
  • 4th Hour – 11:24-12:16 – Mr. Kinard, Mr. Engram, Ms. Edwards
  • 5th Hour – 12:23-1:15 – Ms. Taylor, Ms. Kent, Ms. Williams, Mr. Pegues
  • 6th Hour – 1:22-2:14 – Ms. Taylor, Ms. Kent, Mr. Pegues

On Thursday, February 29, virtual sessions with HBCU Admission counselors will be held in the Tomcat College and Career Center during lunch periods. During these sessions, representatives will talk about their personal institutions as well as extoll the benefits of an HBCU education generally.  The schedule will be as follows:

Thursday, 2/29- HBCU – College Representatives – Virtual Visits

  • 3rd Hour – 10:25-11:17am – Kentucky State University, Frankfort, KY
  • 4th Hour – 11:24-12:16 pm – Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA (tentative)
  • 5th Hour – 12:23-1:15 pm – Harris-Stowe University, St. Louis, MO
  • 6th Hour – 1:22-2:14 pm- Southern University & Agricultural and Mechanical College, Baton Rouge, LA

All interested students are encouraged to attend sessions for both events.

Hay más de 100 colegios y universidades históricamente negros (HBCU) en los Estados Unidos.
