Superintendent Presented With Leader of The Year AwardSuperintendente presentada con el premio Líder del Año 2023

District 131 has had a full month honoring, and celebrating black culture—but on February 24 the African American Heritage Advisory Board’s (AAHAB) dinner brought the spotlight even closer to home.

The 17th annual AAHAB event took place at Belle Salle Banquets in Aurora and, amongst other recognitions, presented current East Aurora District 131 Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Norrell with the 2023 Leader of the Year award.

As 2023 Leader of the Year, the board has recognized Dr. Norrell’s tireless work to raise the standards for educational and community-based excellence within District 131. In the last school year alone, all school sites within the district reached Commendable status or higher on the Illinois State Report Card, while the graduation rate reached a 10-year high and the number of students taking early college courses rose by 29%. These successes and more are attributed to Dr. Norrell’s One Team, One Plan commitment to widening the opportunities for all students, at every level, to reach their fullest academic and social potential.

This same evening, a number of students were recognized as Cowherd Scholars and received college scholarships. This scholarship is named in honor of the late Mr. Henry Cowherd who was an amazing leader in this community. This year, East Aurora High School graduate Mikayla Wilson was among those receiving a scholarship. This presentation, alongside the salute to Dr. Jennifer Norrell, offered an opportunity for students to witness the impact of investing in one’s community.

Among those receiving awards were Servant George Rayford who was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree and those receiving the NIA Award were Katrina Boatright, Director of Senior Services for the City of Aurora and David Smith III, President & CEO of At-Risk Mentoring. These individuals are an example to the meaning of honoring leaders that advance the Aurora community at large.

The entire District 131 staff community and Board of Education congratulates Dr. Norrell on an outstanding year thus far and is grateful for her passion, forward thinking, and commitment.

El Distrito 131 ha tenido un mes lleno de homenajes y celebraciones de la cultura afroamericana, pero la cena del 24 de febrero de la Junta Consultiva de la Herencia Afroamericana (AAHAB por sus siglas en inglés) trajo la atención aún más cerca de casa.

El 17º evento anual tuvo lugar en Belle Salle Banquets en Aurora y, entre otros reconocimientos, presentó a la Superintendente actual del Distrito 131 de East Aurora, la Dra. Jennifer Norrell, con el premio Líder del Año 2023.

Como Líder del Año 2023, la junta ha reconocido el trabajo incansable de la Dra. Norrell para elevar los estándares de excelencia educativa y comunitaria dentro del Distrito 131. Sólo en el último año escolar, todas las escuelas dentro del distrito alcanzaron el estado de Commendable o superior en el Informe de Calificaciones del Estado de Illinois, mientras que la tasa de graduación alcanzó un punto máximo durante los últimos 10 años y el número de estudiantes que tomaron cursos universitarios tempranos aumentó en un 29%. Estos éxitos y muchos más se atribuyen al compromiso de Dra. Norrell Un equipo, un plan para ampliar las oportunidades de todos los estudiantes, en cada nivel, a fin de que alcancen su máximo potencial académico y social.

Esta misma noche, varios estudiantes fueron reconocidos como Académicos de Cowherd y recibieron becas para el colegio. Esta beca fue nombrada en honor al Sr. Henry Cowherd el cual fue un líder ejemplar en esta comunidad. Este año, Mikayla Wilson, estudiante de la escuela East High, fue uno de los estudiantes que recibió una beca. Esta presentación, junto con el homenaje a la Dra. Jennifer Norrell, ofreció a los estudiantes la oportunidad de ser testigos del impacto de invertir en su propia comunidad.

Aquellos que también recibieron honor fueron el Pastor George Rayford, Katrina Boatright, Directora de Servicios de Ancianos de la Ciuidad y David Smith III, Presidente de At-Risk Mentoring. Estos individuos son ejemplos del significado de honrar a los lideres que hacen avanzar la comunidad de Aurora en general.

Todo el personal del Distrito 131 y la Junta de Educación felicitan a la Dra. Norrell por un excelente año y le agradecen su pasión, su compromiso y su visión para el futuro.
