AEEF Scholarship recipient Oscar Zepeda has sent a glowing report summarizing his first year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“It’s nice to reflect on how the year has gone, and to see how things have changed from when I started,” Oscar said. “I would say that I’ve become a lot more responsible and a lot more organized. I’ve become a better student and have learned to time manage.”

He lists several things he has done that are a source of pride for him:

  • He has joined the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and has been busy with many of their activities;
  • He was elected as External Vice President for the First-Year Student Roundtable;
  • He studied abroad in Guatemala for two weeks during winter break, and helped to build a home for a family there which was living in impoverished conditions;
  • He maintained a 3.6 GPA for the first semester; 
  • He has secured a job with the Office of International Programs in Engineering for the fall 2018 semester; 
  • Oscar is thankful to the amazing ARISE Program (Academic Redshirt in Science and Engineering) which offers direct admittance into the College of Engineering.

“Without the help of the AEEF Board, and also ARISE, giving me this opportunity to pursue my education at UIUC, I would not be the person I am today,” Oscar said. “I would like to say ‘thank you’ for giving students such as myself this chance to do something wonderful.”

Oscar Zepeda (1 of 1)

El becario de la AEEF, Oscar Zepeda ha enviado un informe brillante en el que resume su primer año en University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Es bonito reflexionar sobre cómo ha ido el año y ver cómo han cambiado las cosas desde que empecé”, dijo Oscar. “Diría que me he vuelto mucho más responsable y mucho más organizado. Me he convertido en un mejor estudiante y he aprendido a manejar el tiempo”.

Menciona varias cosas que ha hecho y que son un motivo de orgullo para él:

  • Se ha unido a la Sociedad de Ingenieros Profesionales Hispanos y ha estado ocupado con muchas de sus actividades;
  • Fue elegido Vice Presidente externo de la Mesa Redonda de Estudiantes de Primer Año;
  • Estudió en Guatemala durante dos semanas en las vacaciones de invierno y ayudó a construir una casa para una familia que vivía en condiciones de pobreza;
  • Mantuvo un promedio de calificaciones (GPA) 3.6 en el primer semestre
  • Ha conseguido un trabajo en la Oficina de Programas Internacionales en Ingeniería para el semestre de otoño de 2018; 
  • Oscar agradece el “increíble” programa ARISE (Camisas rojas Académicas de la Ciencia y Ingeniería) que ofrece la admisión directa en la Facultad de Ingeniería.

“Sin la ayuda de la Junta de la AEEF y ARISE, dándome esta oportunidad de seguir mi educación en la UIUC, no sería la persona que soy hoy en día”, dijo Oscar. “Me gustaría decir ‘gracias’ por dar a los estudiantes como yo, esta oportunidad de hacer algo maravilloso”.
