The Aurora East Educational Foundation has established a scholarship program to recognize and honor deserving East High graduates who will be continuing their education after high school whether it be at a professional/trade school, junior college or at the university level.
Students may apply for these scholarships via the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (https://www.cffrv.org/scholarship-program/) for which the deadline is in early January.
For the EA Class of 2023, a record 22 Scholarships totaling $53,000 were awarded to deserving students. The AEEF would like to recognize and thank the following benefactors whose generosity makes these scholarships possible.

Delbert E. Dufrain AEEF Memorial Scholarship
Coach Dufrain was admired by students, athletes, and his many colleagues. As much as for what he taught them, he inspired them just by who he was. During his 18 years as head coach, his teams had great success. His 1976 squad made the state playoffs and today is still the only East team to have ever won a playoff game. Coach Dufrain was inducted into the Illinois High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984, and the East Aurora Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. As a well-regarded biology teacher, he was the Kane County Secondary Educator of the Year in 1978.
“Coach Dufrain showed us how to succeed in any walk of life. He was so much more than a biology teacher and football coach,” said Tom Madden of his former teacher, coach, and colleague.
The AEEF is proud to honor Del Dufrain with this scholarship. Coach Dufrain was a wonderful coach and great educator. This scholarship is sponsored by Diana Dufrain and hundreds of other Tomcats whose livers were impacted by Coach Dufrain.
Frances and Thomas Strong Aurora East Educational Foundation Education Scholarship
The AEEF is happy to offer the Frances and Thomas Strong Scholarship, the Stong’s were tireless educators and devoted all of their careers in East Aurora School District 131. This scholarship is sponsored by their son, Tom Strong. Tom Strong, a former AEEF Board Member, went on to enjoy a wonderful career at East Aurora High School.
KCT Credit Union Careers in Education Scholarship
Chartered in 1937, Kane County Teachers (KCT) Credit Union was formed through the efforts of Miss Martha Black, a teacher in the then Elgin Public School District, and Mr. E. Earl McCoy, then Kane County Superintendent of Schools. Since that day, KCT has been dedicated to living the credit union philosophy of people helping people.
The AEEF is thrilled to offer the KCT Credit Union Scholarship to a graduating senior from East Aurora High School. This scholarship is sponsored by the KCT Credit Union, with special thanks going to the KCT’s former president, Mike Lee. Mr. Lee was instrumental in establishing the KCT/Tomcat Affinity Card program with the AEEF and the KCT/D131 Purchasing Card Program with District 131. These programs provide scholarships with the AEEF and resources benefiting District 131.

Genevieve Kennedy Memorial Careers in Education Scholarship
Ms. Carey has dedicated this scholarship to Genevieve Kennedy, the long-time choir director at Simmons Middle School. Ms. Carey believes that “her [Kennedy’s] inspiring teaching and her belief in me sent me on a career path that has given me opportunities I never dreamed I could have way back in 1962.”
The AEEF is proud to honor Ms. Genevieve Kennedy with this scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Merry Carrey and all those Tomcats Ms. Kennedy inspired over the years.
Robert Davis Careers in Education Scholarship
Dr. Weiten, a 1968 East Aurora graduate, recently shared his memories of Mr. Davis, “Mr. Davis was a very supportive, but demanding instructor,” said Dr. Weiten. “He was the first person to get me to apply myself to math. I made the surprising discovery that I liked math and that I had a knack for it. That paved the way for the many statistics courses I would undertake in my undergraduate and graduate studies.” Dr. Weiten utilized his East Aurora academic preparations through his many advancements in higher education. He graduated from Bradley University and received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1981.
The AEEF is proud to honor Mr. Robert Davis with this scholarship, and we are very proud to claim Dr. Weiten as one of our very successful Tomcats. We are grateful for his loyalty and generosity.
Terry Shoup Academic Excellence Scholarship (Second Annual Scholarship)
He was an unforgettable teacher and coach, with a booming voice, a huge, deep laugh, and an intense personality. He always had a story and a joke for everyone he met. He was also a proud union member and organizer in Illinois and in California.
Terry experienced freedom and adventure while sailing, flying, motorcycling, scuba diving, and doing photography. He believed in fully living life every day.
The AEEF is proud to offer the Terry Shoup Scholarship, Mr. Shoup was a once-in-a- generation educator. He taught many of us how to swim always with a grin and smile. The Terry Shoup Scholarship is sponsored by Dr. Susan M. Cooper, former teacher at East Aurora High School, and many Tomcats who have wonderful memories of his love of learning and life by Dr. Susan M. Patricia Readey Kenton Careers in Education Scholarship
Ms. Readey Kenton received her Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Education degrees from Northern Illinois University. Following her graduation, she had imagined a career in scientific research. Fortunately, as fate would have it, she turned her energies to the idea of teaching and the lofty business of inspiring young minds.
As a result of her inspiration two of her former students, Dr. Bill Park and Ken Sajeske, are very pleased to establish this scholarship in Patricia Readey Kenton’s name and honor. This scholarship is designed to aid motivated students interested in pursuing the sciences with enthusiasm, innovation of thought, creativity, motivation toward learning and increasingly important in this world – showing integrity.
The AEEF is proud to offer two Ms. Genevieve Kennedy scholarships. Dr. Park, Ken Sajeske and many, many others who work tirelessly to support this scholarship. Ms. Ready Kenton has made such a wonderful impression on so many students over the years.
Richard “Dick” Paul Careers in Education Scholarship
The AEEF is proud to honor Richard “Dick” Paul with this scholarship, Dick was an awesome coach and an excellent educator. This scholarship is sponsored by Greg & Patti Paul and all of those Tomcats inspired by Coach Paul over the years.

Cruz Family Aurora East Academic Excellence Education Scholarship
The Cruz Family Education Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Ms. Efigenia Cruz and her daughter Ms. Eva Cruz, who were both strong advocates of all Latinos in the Aurora area. Both women volunteered countless hours in their Church and neighborhood communities as they helped immigrant families adjust to and thrive in their new lives.
The Cruz Family wishes this scholarship to honor all immigrant families who sacrifice to secure a better future for their children.
The AEEF is proud to honor the Cruz Family with this scholarship. The Cruz Family is very proud of their children having graduated from East Aurora High School and wanted to extend the opportunity to go to college to more graduating seniors. This scholarship is sponsored by Rich and Margie Fazio and others who have contributed to the fund over the years.
Bob & Judy McCue Academic Excellence Scholarship
As a student, Bob excelled in sports, earning numerous varsity letters at both East High and Western Illinois University. Bob has served on the Dist. 131 Board of Education, the Old Timer’s Committee and as a boys’ baseball and girls’ softball coach.
Judy and Bob have six children who attended Hermes Elementary School, Simmons Middle School, and are graduates of East Aurora High School.
The AEEF is proud to pay homage to Bob and Judy McCue as well as to their children, Bobby, Randy (deceased), Mary, Michael, Ron and Jeff (deceased). The McCue family all share the value of public service and are always generous with their time and resources. The AEEF is proud to honor Charles “Cam” Leadbetter with this scholarship. Cam was a well-respected Athletic Director at East Aurora High School. This scholarship is sponsored by Platt Electric and a host of Tomcats present and future.
Lalo and Efgenia Cruz Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Cruz Family Academic Excellence Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Lalo and Efgenia Cruz. They ensured that their children would graduate from East Aurora and with the right support go on to college. The Cruz’s would like to extend that opportunity to other families in the East Aurora Community.
The AEEF is proud to honor Lalo and Efgenia Cruz with this scholarship, and hope that it will be the nexus for a promising High School senior with living his/her dream. The Lalo and Efgenia Cruz Scholarship was sponsored by Rich and Margie Fazio and a host of other donors.
Dr. John Struck Academic Excellence Scholarship
A graduate of Wisconsin State University—Oshkosh, a veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division, US Army, in Vietnam, Struck began serving our district in 1972 as a science teacher at Simmons Middle School. After earning his MS in Educational Leadership, he advanced to become Dean of Students and later Principal at Simmons. From 1984 until his retirement in 2005, Dr. Struck has served numerous positions, including Associate Superintendent for Educational Administration, and as an adjunct professor at Aurora University. After retiring from District 131, he was a Faculty Research Fellow for one year, and then an Associate Professor in the Master’s Program at AU’s College of Education until 2015.
He has also served our community outside of the school district, notably as a Family Focus-Aurora Advisory Board chair and member since 1980.
The AEEF is proud to honor Dr. John Struck with this scholarship. John impacted so many lives over the years in his various role(s) in District 131. This scholarship is sponsored by Dr. Struck and the many Tomcats that Dr. Struck assisted thought their journey through Aurora East School District 131.
Carol Thompson Academic Excellence Scholarship
Ms. Thompson believes that the education she received in the East Aurora Schools has shaped her whole life and that the skills she acquired there formed the foundation of her moral and ethical life. As a result, she learned how to seek out more knowledge and risk experiences that have enriched her life.
The AEEF is proud to recognize Ms. Carol Thompson with this scholarship. Ms. Thompson’s generous gift of a four-year scholarship is currently the only the AEEF offers. Ms. Thompson explains that without the help she received so many years ago, she might not have gotten her degree, and she hopes that this scholarship will help a struggling student from East Aurora High School.
Fazio Family Excellence Scholarship
The Fazio’s are tireless supporters of the AEEF and have had a major impact on the AEEF Scholarship program. The graduating seniors of East Aurora High School can be thankful for the contributions of the Fazio and Cruz families, especially Rich and Margie.
It is a great honor to recognize Rich and Margie Fazio with the Fazio Family Excellence Scholarship. They take great pride in knowing that there is a college student out there that they are supporting.
The Michelini Family Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Michelini’s created this scholarship fund in 2022 as a celebration of the wonderful education the Michelini children received in Aurora East School District 131. One of the proudest accomplishments of Dick and Marilyn was that they were fortunate enough to send five children to college. The entire family is incredibly pleased to add another student to the list of family and friends that our parents have helped along that journey.
The AEEF is honored to assist the Michelini family by providing this scholarship, both our parents would be happy to see that their value of helping others continues with the next generation of high school graduates. The scholarship is sponsored by Debbie and Mark Michelini.

Dick’s Mini Donuts Vocational Scholarship
Mr. Schindel has always been involved in community activities and organizations that give back to those in need. As the small business owner of Dick’s Mini Donuts, LLC, which he began in 1996, he has been able to help individual schools and organizations raise funds for needed projects. Mr. Schindel believes that this scholarship is another means to help fund projects that will benefit the greater good.
The AEEF is honored to assist Dick Schindel family and Dick’s Mini Donuts by providing this scholarship, Dick’s contributions have inspired, helped, guided, and supported a host of East Aurora High School graduates. This scholarship is sponsored by Dick and Susan Schindel and the many other Tomcats coach Schindel has coach or had in class over the years at East Aurora High School.
Chris and Diamanto Mesiacos Vocational Scholarship
Seeking the American Dream, Chris Mesiacos left Greece and for the United States in 1956. He married Diamanto, in 1960 and raised a loving family of three children in Aurora. Chris was a machinist for 32 years and Diamanto was a seamstress in Aurora for two decades. They spent countless hours volunteering in support of their local church and community, setting an example for their children on the importance of paying it forward and assisting immigrant families to find work and housing.
Born and raised on the East Side, and an East Aurora Graduate, Mesiacos realized the importance the trades played in his growth and success as a husband, father, architect, and public servant.
The AEEF is honored to assist the Mesiacos’ by providing this scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Ted and his wife, Kate, who are very active in the Aurora Community.
Mario and Shirley Fazio Academic Excellence Scholarship
Mario and Shirley Fazio were married when Mario returned from service in the US Navy after World War II. He worked as a milkman for over 30 years, then began a successful career in real estate. “Dad was a self-made man that never looked past a challenge,” recalls Rich. “He also volunteered with Boy Scouts, church committees, and the local Lions Club”. After they won the Harvest Moon Ballroom Dance competition of 1956, Shirley and Mario founded a dance school. Shirley volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, den mother, and for many school programs. She later sought public office and became a member of the city planning board, was a township trustee and president of a women’s political organization.
Rich Fazio remembers his parents “were always generous of their time and money. They believed that given the OPPORTUNITY, hard-working people can do great things.” The Fazios are hopeful that the scholarship recipient will use his or her spirit of entrepreneurship to make a positive impact within the community.
Malcor Roofing Vocational Scholarship
Today, and with over 35 years of industry experience, third generation owner Scott Theisen continues the family born commitment of developing quality relationships with local communities and customers. This history of dedication to customer service and quality have earned Malcor the respect that consistently creates repeat business and life-long customers.

Beca Terry Shoup para Carreras en Educación

Beca Patricia Readey Kenton para Carreras en Educación
La Sra. Readey Kenton obtuvo su licenciatura en Ciencias de la Educación y su Maestría en Ciencias de la Educación en Northern Illinois University. Tras graduarse, imaginó una carrera profesional en investigación científica. Por fortuna, el destino quiso que dedicara sus energías a la docencia y a la noble tarea de inspirar a las mentes jóvenes.
Gracias a su inspiración, dos de sus antiguos estudiantes, el Dr. Bill Park y Ken Sajeske, se complacen en establecer esta beca en nombre y honor de Patricia Readey Kenton. Esta beca está diseñada para apoyar a estudiantes motivados que estén interesados en dedicarse a las ciencias y que tengan entusiasmo, innovación, creatividad, motivación por el aprendizaje y lo que es cada vez más importante en este mundo -mostrar integridad.

Beca Familia Cruz Aurora East de excelencia académica
La Beca de Educación de la Familia Cruz se estableció para rendir homenaje a la memoria de la Sra. Efigenia Cruz y a su hija, la Srta. Eva Cruz, quienes fueron firmes defensoras de todos los latinos en el área de Aurora. Ambas dedicaron innumerables horas de voluntariado en su iglesia y sus comunidades vecinales, ayudando a familias inmigrantes a adaptarse y prosperar en sus nuevas vidas.
La familia Cruz desea que esta beca honre a todas las familias inmigrantes que se sacrifican para asegurar un mejor futuro para sus hijos.

Beca Bob y Judy McCue de excelencia académica
Como estudiante, Bob sobresalió en los deportes, ganándose numerosas letras de varsity tanto en East High como en Western Illinois University. Bob formó parte de la Junta de Educación de District 131, del Comité de Veteranos y fue entrenador de béibol masculino y sótbol femenino.
Judy y Bob tienen seis hijos que asistieron a Hemes Elementary School, Simmons Middle School y son graduados de East Aurora High School.
AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje a Bob y Judy McCue, así como a sus hijos, Bobby, Randy (fallecido), Mary, Michael, Ron y Jeff (fallecido). La familia McCue comparte el valor del servicio público y siempre es generosa con su tiempo y recursos. Beca Charles “Cam” Leadbetter

Beca Lalo and Efgenia Cruz de excelencia académica
La Beca de Excelencia Académica de la Familia Cruz se estableció para honrar la memoria de Lalo y Efgenia Cruz. Beca Dr. John Struck de excelencia académica
Graduado de Wisconsin State University – Oshkosh, un veterano que sirvió en la 25a División de Infantería, Ejército de los Estados Unidos en Vietnam Struck comenzó a servir a nuestro distrito en 1972 como maestro de ciencias en Simmons Middle School Después de obtener su maestría de ciencias en liderazgo educativo, avanzó para convertirse en decano de estudiantes y luego director de Simmons. Desde 1984 hasta su retiro en 2005, el Dr. Struck ha cumplido numerosos puestos, incluido el superintendente asociado para la administración educativa y como profesor adjunto en Aurora University. Después de retirarse del District 131, fue miembro de la investigación de la facultad durante un año, y luego profesor asociado en el programa de maestría en la Facultad de Educación de AU hasta 2015.
También ha servido a nuestra comunidad fuera del distrito escolar, especialmente como presidente y miembro del Consejo Asesor de Family – Focus Aurora desde 1980.
AEEF se enorgullece de brindar homenaje al Dr. John Struck con esta beca. John impactó la vida de muchas personas a lo largo de los años en sus diversos papeles en District 131. Esta beca está patrocinada por el Dr. Struck y los númerosos Tomcats a los que ayudó durante dsu trayectoria en el East Aurora School District 131.
Beca Carol Thompson de excelencia académica
La Sra. Thompson cree que la educación que recibió en las escuelas de East Aurora ha moldeado toda su vida y que las habilidades que adquirió allí sentaron las bases de su vida moral y ética. Como resultado, aprendió a buscar más conocimientos y a vivir experiencias que han enriquecido su vida.
AEEF se enorgullece de reconocer a la Sra. Carol Thompson con esta beca. Su generosa donación de una beca de cuatro años es actualmente la única que ofrece AEEF. La Sra. Thompson explica que sin la ayuda que recibió hace tantos años, tal vez no habría obtenido su título y espera que esta beca ayude a un estudiante con dificultades de East Aurora High School.
Beca Familia Fazio de excelencia académica
Los Fazio apoyan incansablemente a AEEF y han tenido un gran impacto en el programa de becas de la AEEF. Los estudiantes de último año de East Aurora High School pueden estar agradecidos por las contribuciones de las familias Fazio y Cruz, especialmente de Rich y Margie.

Beca familia Michelini de excelencia académica
Los Michelini crearon este fondo de becas en 2022 para celebrar la excelente educación que recibieron sus hijos en el East Aurora School District 131. Uno de los logros de los que Dick y Marilyn se enorgullecen más fue haber tenido la fortuna de enviar a sus cinco hijos a la universidad. Toda la familia está sumamente complacida de añadir a otro estudiante a la lista de familiares y amigos que nuestros padres han apoyado en este camino.

Beca Terry Shoup de excelencia académica (Segunda Beca Anual)
Fue un maestro y entrenador inolvidable, con una voz potente, una risa profunda y baja, y una personalidad intensa. Siempre tenía una historia y un chiste para todos los que conocía. También fue un orgulloso miembro y organizador sindical en Illinois y en California.
Terry experimentó la libertad y la aventura navegando, volando, montando en moto, buceando y tomando fotografías. Creía en vivir la vida al máximo cada día.

Beca Vocacional Dick’s Mini Donuts
El Sr. Schindel siempre ha participado en actividades y organizaciones comunitarias que ayudan a quienes lo necesitan. Como propietario de la pequeña empresa Dick’s Mini Donuts, LLC, fundada en 1996, ha ayudado a escuelas y organizaciones a recaudar fondos para proyectos esenciales. El Sr. Schindel cree que esta beca es otra forma de financiar proyectos que beneficien al bien común.
AEEF se enorgullece de apoyar a la familia Dick Schindel y a Dick’s Mini Donuts con esta beca. Las contribuciones de Dick han inspirado, ayudado, guiado y apoyado a numerosos graduados de East Aurora High School. Beca Vocacional Chris and Diamanto Mesiacos
En busca del sueño americano, Chris Mesiacos dejó Grecia y se mudó a Estados Unidos en 1956. Se casó con Diamanto en 1960 y estableció una amorosa familia de tres hijos en Aurora. Chris trabajó como maquinista durante 32 años y diamanto como costurera en Aurora durante dos décadas. Dedicaron incontables horas de voluntariado a apoyar a su iglesia y comunidad local, dando ejemplo a sus hijos sobre la importancia de la solidaridad y ayudando a familias inmigrantes a encontrar trabajo y vivienda.
Nacido y criado en el East Side y graduado de East Aurora, Mesiacos se dio cuenta de la importancia que tuvieron los oficios en su crecimiento y éxito como esposo, padre, arquitecto y servidor público.
Es un honor para la AEEF apoyar a los Mesiaco con esta beca. Esta beca está patrocinada por Ted y su esposa, Kate, quienes participan activamente en la comunidad de Aurora.
Beca Mario and Shirley Fazio para excelencia académica
Mario y Shirley Fazio se casaron cuando Mario regresó de su servició en la Marina de los Estados Unidos después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Trabajó como lechero durante más de 30 años y luego comenzó una exitosa carrera en el sector inmobiliario. “Mi Papá fue un hombre que prosperó gracias a su esfuerzo y nunca se dio por vencido ante un desafió”, recuerda Rich. “También fue voluntario con los Boy Scouts, comités de iglesia y el Club de Leones local”. Tras ganar el concurso de bailes de salón Harvest Moon de 1956, Shirley y Mario fundaron una escuela de baile. Shirley era voluntario como maestra de escuela dominical, madre de grupo y en numerosos programas escolares. Posteriormente, se postuló para un cargo público y se convirtió en miembro de la junta de planificación urbana, fideicomisaria municipal y presidenta de una organización política de mujeres.
Rich Fazio recuerda que sus padres “siempre fueron generosos con su tiempo y dinero. Creían que, si se les daba la oportunidad, las personas trabajadoras podían lograr grandes cosas”. Los Fazio esperan que el becario utilice su espíritu emprendedor para generar un impacto positivo en la comunidad.
Beca Vocacional de Malcor Roofing
Hoy, con más de 35 años de experiencia en el sector, Scott Thiesen, propietario de tercera generación, continúa con el compromiso familiar de cultivar relaciones de calidad con las comunidades y las clientelas locales. Esta trayectoria de dedicación al servicio al cliente y la calidad le ha ganado a Malcor el respeto que genera constantemente clientelas fieles y de por vida.
