The Aurora East Educational Foundation has established a scholarship program to recognize and honor deserving East High graduates who will be continuing their education after high school whether it be at a professional/trade school, junior college or at the university level.

Students may apply for these scholarships via the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (https://www.cffrv.org/scholarship-program/) for which the deadline is in early January.

Three types of AEEF scholarships are available:

Education – for students pursuing studies w/in the field of Education
Excellence – for students having a minimum 3.5/4.0 GPA
Career & Technical Education – for students pursuing a career path via a professional, trade or vocational studies program

For the EA Class of 2023, a record 22 Scholarships totaling $53,000 were awarded to deserving students. The AEEF would like to recognize and thank the following benefactors whose generosity makes these scholarships possible.

Delbert E. Dufrain AEEF Memorial Scholarship

The Delbert E. Dufrain arrived at East Aurora in 1961 as the new head football coach and biology teacher.

Coach Dufrain was admired by students, athletes, and his many colleagues. As much as for what he taught them, he inspired them just by who he was. During his 18 years as head coach, his teams had great success. His 1976 squad made the state playoffs and today is still the only East team to have ever won a playoff game. Coach Dufrain was inducted into the Illinois High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984, and the East Aurora Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. As a well-regarded biology teacher, he was the Kane County Secondary Educator of the Year in 1978.

“Coach Dufrain showed us how to succeed in any walk of life. He was so much more than a biology teacher and football coach,” said Tom Madden of his former teacher, coach, and colleague.

The AEEF is proud to honor Del Dufrain with this scholarship. Coach Dufrain was a wonderful coach and great educator. This scholarship is sponsored by Diana Dufrain and hundreds of other Tomcats whose livers were impacted by Coach Dufrain.

Frances and Thomas Strong Aurora East Educational Foundation Education Scholarship

The Frances and Thomas Strong Education Scholarship was established to honor these lifetime East Side residents and community servants. Frances Heimsath Strong was a career educator who was born and raised on the East Side of Aurora. Mrs. Strong served as a substitute teacher for many years in all Dist. 131 schools, much of the time at Simmons Middle School. Thomas G. Strong, also born and raised on the East Side and was a 1932 graduate of East High School. Mr. Strong excelled in music during his school years. He served in World War II from 1941-45 and rose to the rank of Captain in the US Army. Mr. Strong returned to Aurora, finished college, and came back to East High School to teach print shop for several years.

The AEEF is happy to offer the Frances and Thomas Strong Scholarship, the Stong’s were tireless educators and devoted all of their careers in East Aurora School District 131. This scholarship is sponsored by their son, Tom Strong. Tom Strong, a former AEEF Board Member, went on to enjoy a wonderful career at East Aurora High School.

KCT Credit Union Careers in Education Scholarship

The KCT Credit Union Education Scholarship aligns with KCT’s mission of Building Stronger Communities Together. The Aurora East Educational Foundation and KCT both believe that education, whether academic or financial, has the power to transform lives.

Chartered in 1937, Kane County Teachers (KCT) Credit Union was formed through the efforts of Miss Martha Black, a teacher in the then Elgin Public School District, and Mr. E. Earl McCoy, then Kane County Superintendent of Schools. Since that day, KCT has been dedicated to living the credit union philosophy of people helping people.

The AEEF is thrilled to offer the KCT Credit Union Scholarship to a graduating senior from East Aurora High School. This scholarship is sponsored by the KCT Credit Union, with special thanks going to the KCT’s former president, Mike Lee. Mr. Lee was instrumental in establishing the KCT/Tomcat Affinity Card program with the AEEF and the KCT/D131 Purchasing Card Program with District 131. These programs provide scholarships with the AEEF and resources benefiting District 131.

Genevieve Kennedy Memorial Careers in Education Scholarship

Merry Carey is a 1968 graduate of East High School and considers herself a “proud Tomcat.” In 1972, she graduated from Illinois State University in Music Education, later earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University. Merry taught for 34 years in Dist. 129 and directed many youth and adult choirs in the area. She has served on numerous community boards including the AEEF Board.

Ms. Carey has dedicated this scholarship to Genevieve Kennedy, the long-time choir director at Simmons Middle School. Ms. Carey believes that “her [Kennedy’s] inspiring teaching and her belief in me sent me on a career path that has given me opportunities I never dreamed I could have way back in 1962.”

The AEEF is proud to honor Ms. Genevieve Kennedy with this scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Merry Carrey and all those Tomcats Ms. Kennedy inspired over the years.

Robert Davis Careers in Education Scholarship

The Robert Davis Scholarship has been established through the generosity of Dr. Wayne Weiten. Mr. Davis was a math teacher at East High School in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

Dr. Weiten, a 1968 East Aurora graduate, recently shared his memories of Mr. Davis, “Mr. Davis was a very supportive, but demanding instructor,” said Dr. Weiten. “He was the first person to get me to apply myself to math. I made the surprising discovery that I liked math and that I had a knack for it. That paved the way for the many statistics courses I would undertake in my undergraduate and graduate studies.” Dr. Weiten utilized his East Aurora academic preparations through his many advancements in higher education. He graduated from Bradley University and received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1981.

The AEEF is proud to honor Mr. Robert Davis with this scholarship, and we are very proud to claim Dr. Weiten as one of our very successful Tomcats. We are grateful for his loyalty and generosity.

Terry Shoup Academic Excellence Scholarship (Second Annual Scholarship)

Terry was a teacher for 43 years and served as a Physical Education teacher at East High from 1970-86. He also coached swimming and girls’ volleyball during that time. Terry graduated from Bloomington, Illinois High School, and participated in football, wrestling, and track. He was a four-year letterman in swimming at Illinois State University, where he received his BS degree in 1966 and MS degree in 1971.

He was an unforgettable teacher and coach, with a booming voice, a huge, deep laugh, and an intense personality. He always had a story and a joke for everyone he met. He was also a proud union member and organizer in Illinois and in California.

Terry experienced freedom and adventure while sailing, flying, motorcycling, scuba diving, and doing photography. He believed in fully living life every day.

The AEEF is proud to offer the Terry Shoup Scholarship, Mr. Shoup was a once-in-a- generation educator. He taught many of us how to swim always with a grin and smile. The Terry Shoup Scholarship is sponsored by Dr. Susan M. Cooper, former teacher at East Aurora High School, and many Tomcats who have wonderful memories of his love of learning and life by Dr. Susan M. Patricia Readey Kenton Careers in Education Scholarship

Patricia “Patti” Readey (at the time) took on her first teaching position in the Science Department at KD Waldo Junior High in 1964, intent on opening young minds and inviting students into a lifelong rapture with the sciences.

Ms. Readey Kenton received her Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Education degrees from Northern Illinois University. Following her graduation, she had imagined a career in scientific research. Fortunately, as fate would have it, she turned her energies to the idea of teaching and the lofty business of inspiring young minds.

As a result of her inspiration two of her former students, Dr. Bill Park and Ken Sajeske, are very pleased to establish this scholarship in Patricia Readey Kenton’s name and honor. This scholarship is designed to aid motivated students interested in pursuing the sciences with enthusiasm, innovation of thought, creativity, motivation toward learning and increasingly important in this world – showing integrity.

The AEEF is proud to offer two Ms. Genevieve Kennedy scholarships. Dr. Park, Ken Sajeske and many, many others who work tirelessly to support this scholarship. Ms. Ready Kenton has made such a wonderful impression on so many students over the years.

Richard “Dick” Paul Careers in Education Scholarship

Richard Paul

Hailing from Clarion, Iowa and a graduate of Cornell College in Iowa, Coach Dick Paul came to District 131 in 1958. After teaching at Brady Elementary, Simmons Junior High and Waldo Junior High, he landed at East High in 1966 and invested his time, energy, and passion into leading students in the classroom and on the athletic fields. He coached basketball, cross country, and most notably was the head track coach for 24 years before retiring in 1994. For many years he was also the “voice of the Fighting Tomcats” at all home athletic events. As the head of the math department at East he was chosen as the Kane County secondary educator of the year in 1980. Coach Paul was honored with induction into both the Cornell College and East Aurora High School Athletic Halls of Fame.

The AEEF is proud to honor Richard “Dick” Paul with this scholarship, Dick was an awesome coach and an excellent educator. This scholarship is sponsored by Greg & Patti Paul and all of those Tomcats inspired by Coach Paul over the years.

Cruz Family Aurora East Academic Excellence Education Scholarship

Cruz Family Scholarship

The Cruz Family moved to the East Side of Aurora in the 1950’s. They left their home in Puerto Rico and moved to the mainland United States in the hope of a brighter future for their five children.

The Cruz Family Education Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Ms. Efigenia Cruz and her daughter Ms. Eva Cruz, who were both strong advocates of all Latinos in the Aurora area. Both women volunteered countless hours in their Church and neighborhood communities as they helped immigrant families adjust to and thrive in their new lives.

The Cruz Family wishes this scholarship to honor all immigrant families who sacrifice to secure a better future for their children.
The AEEF is proud to honor the Cruz Family with this scholarship. The Cruz Family is very proud of their children having graduated from East Aurora High School and wanted to extend the opportunity to go to college to more graduating seniors. This scholarship is sponsored by Rich and Margie Fazio and others who have contributed to the fund over the years.

Bob & Judy McCue Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Bob and Judy McCue Scholarship was established in 2020.
Bob, a 1956 East Aurora graduate, and Judy, a graduate of Madonna High School in that same year, have been active in the East Aurora community throughout their entire lives. They are true Tomcats and can be said to “bleed red and black.”

As a student, Bob excelled in sports, earning numerous varsity letters at both East High and Western Illinois University. Bob has served on the Dist. 131 Board of Education, the Old Timer’s Committee and as a boys’ baseball and girls’ softball coach.

Judy and Bob have six children who attended Hermes Elementary School, Simmons Middle School, and are graduates of East Aurora High School.
The AEEF is proud to pay homage to Bob and Judy McCue as well as to their children, Bobby, Randy (deceased), Mary, Michael, Ron and Jeff (deceased). The McCue family all share the value of public service and are always generous with their time and resources. This scholarship is sponsored by Bobby, Mary, Michael, and Ron who have contributed to the fund over the years.

Charles “Cam” Leadbetter

Cam graduated from East Aurora High School in 1995, where he played football and wrestled, meeting his lifelong friends along the way. He attended Waubonsee Community College and Western Illinois University, graduating in 1999, and Aurora University, where he earned his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership Degree. Cam was hired by East Aurora School District #131 in August of 2000. Over the last 22 years he was a teacher, dean, coach, and Athletic Director. Over the years he also coached at Waldo and Simmons Middle Schools. Cam truly was a Tomcat; he bled red and black. He loved all his students, players, and co-workers. Cam also umpired for Boys Baseball of Aurora for many years.

The AEEF is proud to honor Charles “Cam” Leadbetter with this scholarship. Cam was a well-respected Athletic Director at East Aurora High School. This scholarship is sponsored by Platt Electric and a host of Tomcats present and future.

Lalo and Efgenia Cruz Academic Excellence Scholarship

Lalo and Efgenia migrated from Puerto Rico in 1950 and raised their family on the eastside of Aurora. With hopes of a better life and education supported their children though the Aurora East School District 131. The Cruz’s valued education and supported their children and others on a difficult transition to the Aurora.

The Cruz Family Academic Excellence Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Lalo and Efgenia Cruz. They ensured that their children would graduate from East Aurora and with the right support go on to college. The Cruz’s would like to extend that opportunity to other families in the East Aurora Community.

The AEEF is proud to honor Lalo and Efgenia Cruz with this scholarship, and hope that it will be the nexus for a promising High School senior with living his/her dream. The Lalo and Efgenia Cruz Scholarship was sponsored by Rich and Margie Fazio and a host of other donors.

Dr. John Struck Academic Excellence Scholarship

Dr. John Struck is a well-known educator and administrator in Dist. 131. Through his generosity, the AEEF has established the Dr. John Struck Scholarship.

A graduate of Wisconsin State University—Oshkosh, a veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division, US Army, in Vietnam, Struck began serving our district in 1972 as a science teacher at Simmons Middle School. After earning his MS in Educational Leadership, he advanced to become Dean of Students and later Principal at Simmons. From 1984 until his retirement in 2005, Dr. Struck has served numerous positions, including Associate Superintendent for Educational Administration, and as an adjunct professor at Aurora University. After retiring from District 131, he was a Faculty Research Fellow for one year, and then an Associate Professor in the Master’s Program at AU’s College of Education until 2015.

He has also served our community outside of the school district, notably as a Family Focus-Aurora Advisory Board chair and member since 1980.

The AEEF is proud to honor Dr. John Struck with this scholarship. John impacted so many lives over the years in his various role(s) in District 131. This scholarship is sponsored by Dr. Struck and the many Tomcats that Dr. Struck assisted thought their journey through Aurora East School District 131.

Carol Thompson Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Carol Thompson Excellence Scholarship was established in gratitude to East High School and District 131. Ms. Thompson attended Bardwell Elementary School, East Junior High School, and graduated from the “new” East High in 1960. With the help of several scholarships, Ms. Thompson received a degree from Knox College in Galesburg, IL. Which enabled her to pursue a career in education and public service.

Ms. Thompson believes that the education she received in the East Aurora Schools has shaped her whole life and that the skills she acquired there formed the foundation of her moral and ethical life. As a result, she learned how to seek out more knowledge and risk experiences that have enriched her life.

The AEEF is proud to recognize Ms. Carol Thompson with this scholarship. Ms. Thompson’s generous gift of a four-year scholarship is currently the only the AEEF offers. Ms. Thompson explains that without the help she received so many years ago, she might not have gotten her degree, and she hopes that this scholarship will help a struggling student from East Aurora High School.

Fazio Family Excellence Scholarship

Realizing the importance of the arts and sciences to our society, Mr. and Mrs. Rich and Margie Fazio believe that education can be a great equalizer. They believe that students of all backgrounds can attain amazing personal and professional goals with internal determination and dedication to learning. Mr. and Mrs. Fazio have established this scholarship in honor of students who have dedicated themselves to learning their craft and who wish to pursue a career in the arts or sciences.

The Fazio’s are tireless supporters of the AEEF and have had a major impact on the AEEF Scholarship program. The graduating seniors of East Aurora High School can be thankful for the contributions of the Fazio and Cruz families, especially Rich and Margie.

It is a great honor to recognize Rich and Margie Fazio with the Fazio Family Excellence Scholarship. They take great pride in knowing that there is a college student out there that they are supporting.

The Michelini Family Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Michelini family resided on South Lincoln Avenue from 1959 to 2015. All five of the Michelini children attended Aurora East School District 131 Schools (Bardwell, Krug, Waldo, and East Aurora High School). The Michelini’s have five children: Thomas ’72, Marie Lynn ’73, Mark ’77, Lisa ’80, Tina ’90.

The Michelini’s created this scholarship fund in 2022 as a celebration of the wonderful education the Michelini children received in Aurora East School District 131. One of the proudest accomplishments of Dick and Marilyn was that they were fortunate enough to send five children to college. The entire family is incredibly pleased to add another student to the list of family and friends that our parents have helped along that journey.

The AEEF is honored to assist the Michelini family by providing this scholarship, both our parents would be happy to see that their value of helping others continues with the next generation of high school graduates. The scholarship is sponsored by Debbie and Mark Michelini.

Dick’s Mini Donuts Vocational Scholarship

Richard “Dick” Schindel is a 1966 graduate of East High School and a graduate of the University of Illinois. He spent his entire professional career, from 1970 until 2005, as an educator. He began teaching in Dist. 131 in 1973, and at East High School in 1979. He became head of the Business Education department in 1986, served as varsity head coach in football and softball, and as a lower-level baseball coach.

Mr. Schindel has always been involved in community activities and organizations that give back to those in need. As the small business owner of Dick’s Mini Donuts, LLC, which he began in 1996, he has been able to help individual schools and organizations raise funds for needed projects. Mr. Schindel believes that this scholarship is another means to help fund projects that will benefit the greater good.

The AEEF is honored to assist Dick Schindel family and Dick’s Mini Donuts by providing this scholarship, Dick’s contributions have inspired, helped, guided, and supported a host of East Aurora High School graduates. This scholarship is sponsored by Dick and Susan Schindel and the many other Tomcats coach Schindel has coach or had in class over the years at East Aurora High School.

Chris and Diamanto Mesiacos Vocational Scholarship

The Chris and Diamanto Mesiacos Vocational Scholarship has been established through the generosity of their son, Aurora Alderman Ted Mesiacos to honor the memory of his parents, their plentiful successes, and their belief that life is a calling beyond oneself.

Seeking the American Dream, Chris Mesiacos left Greece and for the United States in 1956. He married Diamanto, in 1960 and raised a loving family of three children in Aurora. Chris was a machinist for 32 years and Diamanto was a seamstress in Aurora for two decades. They spent countless hours volunteering in support of their local church and community, setting an example for their children on the importance of paying it forward and assisting immigrant families to find work and housing.

Born and raised on the East Side, and an East Aurora Graduate, Mesiacos realized the importance the trades played in his growth and success as a husband, father, architect, and public servant.

The AEEF is honored to assist the Mesiacos’ by providing this scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Ted and his wife, Kate, who are very active in the Aurora Community.

Mario and Shirley Fazio Academic Excellence Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. Rich and Margie Fazio have established the Mario and Shirley Fazio Excellence Scholarship in tribute to Rich’s parents.

Mario and Shirley Fazio were married when Mario returned from service in the US Navy after World War II. He worked as a milkman for over 30 years, then began a successful career in real estate. “Dad was a self-made man that never looked past a challenge,” recalls Rich. “He also volunteered with Boy Scouts, church committees, and the local Lions Club”. After they won the Harvest Moon Ballroom Dance competition of 1956, Shirley and Mario founded a dance school. Shirley volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, den mother, and for many school programs. She later sought public office and became a member of the city planning board, was a township trustee and president of a women’s political organization.

Rich Fazio remembers his parents “were always generous of their time and money. They believed that given the OPPORTUNITY, hard-working people can do great things.” The Fazios are hopeful that the scholarship recipient will use his or her spirit of entrepreneurship to make a positive impact within the community.

Malcor Roofing Vocational Scholarship

Malcor Roofing Scholarship

Three generations and one hundred years later, the Theisen family and Malcor have become two of the most respected names in the roofing industry in Chicago’s western suburbs. Providing quality, professional roofing and repair services, Malcor Roofing of Illinois, Inc. specializes in the application of single-ply, built-up and modified roofing systems for industrial and commercial buildings.

Today, and with over 35 years of industry experience, third generation owner Scott Theisen continues the family born commitment of developing quality relationships with local communities and customers. This history of dedication to customer service and quality have earned Malcor the respect that consistently creates repeat business and life-long customers.

The AEEF is proud to honor Malcor Roofing of Illinois, Inc., and Scott Theisen with this scholarship. Malcor Roofing and the Theisen family have been long supporters of Aurora East School District 131. This scholarship is sponsored by Scott Theisen and family.

La Fundación Educativa del Este de Aurora ha establecido un programa de becas para reconocer y honrar a los graduados de la escuela de East Aurora High School que merecen continuar su educación después de la escuela preparatoria, ya sea en una escuela de oficio/profesional, colegio o a nivel universitario.

Los estudiantes pueden solicitar estas becas a través de la Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (https://www.cffrv.org/scholarship-program/) cuya fecha límite es a principios de enero.

Para la clase de 2023 de EA, se concedieron 22 becas con total de $53,000 a estudiantes merecedores. La AEEF desea reconocer y agradecer a los siguientes benefactores cuya generosidad hace posible estas becas.

Beca Delbert E. Dufrain para Carreras en Educación

Delbert E. Dufrain llegó a East Aurora en 1961 como el nuevo entrenador principal de fútbol americano y maestro de biología.

El entrenador Dufrain era admirado por los estudiantes, los atletas y sus numerosos colegas. No solo por lo que les enseñaba, sino también por cómo era. Durante sus 18 años como entrenador principal, sus equipos alcanzaron grandes éxitos. Su equipo de 1976 llegó a las eliminatorias estatales y hoy sigue siendo el único equipo de East que ha ganado un partido de playoffs. El entrenador Dufrain fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama de Entrenadores de Escuelas Preparatorias de Illinois en 1984 y en el Salón de la Fama de los Deportes de East Aurora en 1992. Como un respetable maestro de biología, fue nombrado Educador de secundaria del Año de Kane County en 1978.

“El entrenador Dufrain nos enseñó a triunfar en cualquier ámbito de la vida. Él era mucho más que un maestro de biología y un entrenador de fútbol americano”, dijo Tom Madden sobre su antiguo maestro, entrenador y colega.

AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje a Del Dufrain por medio de esta beca. El entrenador Dufrain fue un entrenador maravilloso y un gran educador. Esta beca está patrocinada por Diana Dufrain y cientos de otros Tomcats cuyas vidas fueron impactadas por el entrenador Dufrain.

Beca Frances y Thomas Strong para carreras en educación

La beca en educación Frances y Thomas Strong se estableció para rendir homenaje a estos residentes de toda la vida del East Side que también fueron servidores comunitarios. Frances Heimsath Strong fue una educadora de carrera que nació y creció en el East Side de Aurora. La Sra. Strong se desempeñó como maestra sustituta durante muchos años en todas las escuelas del Distrito 131, principalmente en Simmons Middle School. Thomas G. Strong, también nacido y criado en el East Side, se graduó de East Aurora High School en 1932. El Sr. Strong sobresalió en música durante sus años escolares. Sirvió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial desde 1941 hasta 1945 y ascendió al rango de Capitán del Ejército de los Estados Unidos. El Sr. Strong regresó a Aurora, terminó la universidad y regresó East Aurora High School para enseñar taller de imprenta durante varios años.

AEEF se complace en ofrecer la Beca Frances y Thomas Strong. Los Stong fueron educadores incansables y dedicaron toda su carrera a East Aurora School District 131. Esta beca está patrocinada por su hijo, Tom Strong. Tom Strong, exmiembro de la Junta Directiva de la AEEF, disfrutó de una maravillosa carrera profesional en East Aurora High School.

Beca KCT Credit Union para Carreras en Educación

La Beca Educativa de KCT Credit Union se alinea con la misión de KCT de Construir juntos comunidades más fuertes. Aurora East Educational Foundation y KCT creen que la educación, ya sea académica o financiera, tiene el poder de transformar vidas.

Fundada en 1937, Kane County Teachers (KCT) se formó gracias a la iniciativa de la Srta. Martha Black, maestra del entonces Elgin Public School District y el Sr. E. Earl McCoy, entonces Superintendente de escuelas de Kane County. Desde ese día, KCT se ha dedicado a vivir la filosofía de las uniones de crédito de personas que ayudan a otras personas.

AEEF se complace en ofrecer la Beca KCT Credit Union a un estudiante de último año de East Aurora High School. Esta beca está patrocinada por KCT Credit Union, con un agradecimiento especial a su expresidente, Mike Lee. El Sr. Lee jugó un papel decisivo en el establecimiento del programa de la tarjeta de Afinidad KCT/Tomcat con la AEEF y del Programa de tarjetas de débito KCT/D131 con District 131. Beca Genevieve Kennedy Memorial para Carreras en Educación

Merry Carey es una graduada de la secundaria East High de 1968 y se considera una “orgullosa Tomcat”. En 1972, se graduó de Illinois State University en Educación Musical y posteriormente obtuvo una Maestría en Administración Educativa de Northern Illinois University. Merry impartió clases durante 34 años en District 129 y dirigió numerosos coros juveniles y de adultos en el área. Ha formado parte de numerosas juntas comunitarias, incluyendo la Junta de la AEEF.

La Sra. Carey ha dedicado esta beca a Genevieve Kennedy, directora del coro de Simmons Middle School desde hace mucho tiempo. La Sra. Carey cree que “su enseñanza inspiradora [de Kennedy] y su fe en mí me impulsaron a seguir una carrera profesional que me ha brindado oportunidades que nunca soñé tener en 1962”.

Beca Robert Davis para Carreras en Educación

La Beca Robert Davis se estableció gracias a la generosidad del Dr. Wayne Weiten. El Sr. Davis fue maestro de matemáticas en la secundaria East High a finales de los años 60 y principios de los 70.

El Dr. Weiten, un graduado de East Aurora de 1968, compartió recientemente sus recuerdos del Sr. Davis: “El Sr. Davis fue un instructor muy comprensivo, pero exigente”, dijo el Dr. Weiten. “Fue la primera persona que me inspiró a dedicarme a las matemáticas. Descubrí, sorprendentemente, que me gustaban y que tenía un don para ellas. Eso allanó el camino para los numerosos cursos de estadística que realizaría en mis estudios de pregrado y posgrado”. El Dr. Weiten aprovechó su preparación académica en East Aurora para sus numerosos avances en la educación superior. Se graduó de Bradley University y obtuvo su doctorado en psicología social de University of Illinois en Chicago en 1981.

AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje al Sr. Robert Davis con esta beca, y nos estamos muy orgullosos de reconocer al Dr. Weiten como uno de nuestros exitosos Tomcats. Agradecemos su lealtad y generosidad.

Beca Terry Shoup para Carreras en Educación

Terry fue maestro durante 43 años y se desempeñó como maestro de Educación Física en East High de 1970 a 1986. También fue entrenador de natación y voleibol femenino durante ese tiempo. Terry se graduó de Bloomington High School en Illinois, y participó en fútbol americano, lucha y pista y campo. Fue nadador destacado durante cuatro años en Illinois State University, donde obtuvo su licenciatura en 1966 y su maestría en 1971.

Fue un maestro y entrenador inolvidable, con una voz potente, una risa profunda y baja, y una personalidad intensa. Siempre tenía una historia y un chiste para todos los que conocía. También fue un orgulloso miembro y organizador sindical en Illinois y en California

Terry experimentó la libertad y la aventura navegando, volando, montando en moto, buceando y tomando fotografías. Creía en vivir la vida al máximo cada día.

AEEF se enorgullece de ofrecer la Beca Terry Shoup. El Sr. Shoup fue un educador único en su generación. Nos enseñó a muchos a nadar, siempre con una gran sonrisa. Beca Patricia Readey Kenton para Carreras en Educación

Patricia “Patty” Readey (en ese momento) asumió su primer puesto como docente en el Departamento de Ciencias de KD Waldo Junior High en 1964, con la intención de abrir las mentes de los jóvenes e invitar a los estudiantes a tener fascinación de por vida por los ciencias.

La Sra. Readey Kenton obtuvo su licenciatura en Ciencias de la Educación y su Maestría en Ciencias de la Educación en Northern Illinois University. Tras graduarse, imaginó una carrera profesional en investigación científica. Por fortuna, el destino quiso que dedicara sus energías a la docencia y a la noble tarea de inspirar a las mentes jóvenes.

Gracias a su inspiración, dos de sus antiguos estudiantes, el Dr. Bill Park y Ken Sajeske, se complacen en establecer esta beca en nombre y honor de Patricia Readey Kenton. Esta beca está diseñada para apoyar a estudiantes motivados que estén interesados en dedicarse a las ciencias y que tengan entusiasmo, innovación, creatividad, motivación por el aprendizaje y lo que es cada vez más importante en este mundo -mostrar integridad.

Beca Richard “Dick” Paul para Carreras en Educación

Richard Paul

Originario de Clairion, Iowa, y graduado de Cornell College in Iowa, el entrenador Dick Paul llegó a District 131 en 1958. Tras impartir clases en Brady Elementary, Simmons Junior High y Waldo Junior High, llegó a East High en 1966 e invirtió su tiempo, energía y pasión en liderar a los estudiantes tanto en el salón de clases como en los campos deportivos. Entrenó baloncesto, campo a través y lo más relevante todo, fue entrenador principal de atletismo durante 24 años antes de jubilarse en 1994. Durante muchos años, también fue la voz de los Fighting Tomcats en todos los eventos deportivos locales. Como director del departamento de matemáticas de East, fue elegido educador de secundaria del año de Kane County en 1980. El entrenador Paul fue honrado con la incorporación al Salón de la Fama del Atletismo de Cornell College y de East Aurora High School.

EEF se enorgullece de honrar a Richard “Dick” Paul con esta beca. Dick fue un entrenador excepcional y un excelente educador. Esta beca está patrocinada por Greg y Patti Paul y todos los Tomcats que se inspiraron en el entrenador Paul a lo largo de los años.

Beca Familia Cruz Aurora East de excelencia académica

Cruz Family Scholarship

La familia Cruz se mudó al East Side de Aurora en la década de 1950. Dejaron su hogar en Puerto Rico y se mudaron a los Estados Unidos con la esperanza de un futuro mejor para sus cinco hijos.

La Beca de Educación de la Familia Cruz se estableció para rendir homenaje a la memoria de la Sra. Efigenia Cruz y a su hija, la Srta. Eva Cruz, quienes fueron firmes defensoras de todos los latinos en el área de Aurora. Ambas dedicaron innumerables horas de voluntariado en su iglesia y sus comunidades vecinales, ayudando a familias inmigrantes a adaptarse y prosperar en sus nuevas vidas.

La familia Cruz desea que esta beca honre a todas las familias inmigrantes que se sacrifican para asegurar un mejor futuro para sus hijos.

AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje a la familia Cruz con esta beca. La familia Cruz está muy orgullosa de que sus hijos se hayan graduados de East Aurora High School y deseaba brindarles a más estudiantes de último año la oportunidad de ir a la universidad. Beca Bob y Judy McCue de excelencia académica

La Beca Bob y Judy McCue se estableció en 2020. Bob, graduado de East Aurora en 1956 y Judy, graduada de Madonna High School ese mismo año, han participado activamente en la comunidad de East Aurora durante toda su vida. Son verdaderos Tomcats y se puede decir que tienen sangre “roja y negra”.

Como estudiante, Bob sobresalió en los deportes, ganándose numerosas letras de varsity tanto en East High como en Western Illinois University. Bob formó parte de la Junta de Educación de District 131, del Comité de Veteranos y fue entrenador de béibol masculino y sótbol femenino.

Judy y Bob tienen seis hijos que asistieron a Hemes Elementary School, Simmons Middle School y son graduados de East Aurora High School.

AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje a Bob y Judy McCue, así como a sus hijos, Bobby, Randy (fallecido), Mary, Michael, Ron y Jeff (fallecido). La familia McCue comparte el valor del servicio público y siempre es generosa con su tiempo y recursos. Esta beca está patrocinada por Bobby, Mary, Michael y Ron, quienes han contribuido al fondo a lo largo de los años.

Beca Charles “Cam” Leadbetter

Cam se graduó de East Aurora High School en 1995, donde jugó fútbol americano y luchó, conociendo a sus amigos de toda la vida. Asistió a Waubonsee Community College y a Aurora University, donde obtuvo su Maestría en Liderazgo Educativo. Cam fue contratado por East Aurora School District 131 en agosto 2000. Durantes los últimos 22 años, fue maestro, decano, entrenador y director atlético. Con el tiempo entrenó en las escuelas intermedias Waldo y Simmons. Cam era un auténtico Tomcat; tenía sangre roja y negra. Amaba a todos sus estudiantes, jugadores y compañeros de trabajo. Cam también fue árbitro del equipo de béisbol masculino de Aurora durantes muchos años.

AEEF se enorgullece de rendir homenaje a Charles “Cam” Leadbetter con esta beca. Cam fue un respetado director atlético de East Aurora High School.

Beca Lalo and Efgenia Cruz de excelencia académica

Lalo y Efgenia emigraron de Puerto Rico en 1950 y criaron a su familia en el eastside de Aurora. Con la esperanza de una vida mejor y una educación mejor, apoyaron a sus hijos a través de Aurora East School District 131. Los Cruz valoraban la educación y apoyaron a sus hijos y a otras personas durante la difícil transición a Aurora.

La Beca de Excelencia Académica de la Familia Cruz se estableció para honrar la memoria de Lalo y Efgenia Cruz. Ellos se aseguraron de que sus hijos se graduarán de East Aurora y con el apoyo adecuado, pudieron ir a la universidad. Los Cruz desean brindar esta oportunidad a otras familias de la comunidad de East Aurora.

Beca Dr. John Struck de excelencia académica

El Dr. John Struck es un conocido educador y administrador en Dist. 131. A través de su generosidad, el AEEF ha establecido la beca D. John Struck.

Graduado de Wisconsin State University – Oshkosh, un veterano que sirvió en la 25a División de Infantería, Ejército de los Estados Unidos en Vietnam Struck comenzó a servir a nuestro distrito en 1972 como maestro de ciencias en Simmons Middle School Después de obtener su maestría de ciencias en liderazgo educativo, avanzó para convertirse en decano de estudiantes y luego director de Simmons. Desde 1984 hasta su retiro en 2005, el Dr. Struck ha cumplido numerosos puestos, incluido el superintendente asociado para la administración educativa y como profesor adjunto en Aurora University. Después de retirarse del District 131, fue miembro de la investigación de la facultad durante un año, y luego profesor asociado en el programa de maestría en la Facultad de Educación de AU hasta 2015.

También ha servido a nuestra comunidad fuera del distrito escolar, especialmente como presidente y miembro del Consejo Asesor de Family – Focus Aurora desde 1980.

AEEF se enorgullece de brindar homenaje al Dr. John Struck con esta beca. John impactó la vida de muchas personas a lo largo de los años en sus diversos papeles en District 131. Esta beca está patrocinada por el Dr. Struck y los númerosos Tomcats a los que ayudó durante dsu trayectoria en el East Aurora School District 131.

Beca Carol Thompson de excelencia académica

La Beca de Excelencia Carol Thompson se estableció en agradecimiento a East Aurora High School y a District 131. La Sra. Thompson asistió a Bardwell Elementary School y a East Junior High School, y se graduó de la “nueva” East High en 1960. Gracias a varias becas, La Sra. Thompson se graduó de Knox College en Galesburg Illinois. Esto le permitió desarrollar una carrera en educación y servicio público.

La Sra. Thompson cree que la educación que recibió en las escuelas de East Aurora ha moldeado toda su vida y que las habilidades que adquirió allí sentaron las bases de su vida moral y ética. Como resultado, aprendió a buscar más conocimientos y a vivir experiencias que han enriquecido su vida.

AEEF se enorgullece de reconocer a la Sra. Carol Thompson con esta beca. Su generosa donación de una beca de cuatro años es actualmente la única que ofrece AEEF. La Sra. Thompson explica que sin la ayuda que recibió hace tantos años, tal vez no habría obtenido su título y espera que esta beca ayude a un estudiante con dificultades de East Aurora High School.

Beca Familia Fazio de excelencia académica

Conscientes de la importancia de las artes y las ciencias para nuestra sociedad, el Sr. Rich y Margie Fazio creen que la educación puede ser un gran factor de igualdad. Creen que estudiantes de todos los origines pueden alcanzar asombrosas metas personales y profesionales. Teniendo determinación y dedicación al aprendizaje. El Sr. Y la Sra. Fazio han establecido esta beca en honor a los estudiantes que se han dedicado a aprender su oficio y que desean una carrera en las artes o las ciencias.

Los Fazio apoyan incansablemente a AEEF y han tenido un gran impacto en el programa de becas de la AEEF. Los estudiantes de último año de East Aurora High School pueden estar agradecidos por las contribuciones de las familias Fazio y Cruz, especialmente de Rich y Margie.

Es un gran honor reconocer a Rich y Margie Fazio con la Beca familia Fazio de Excelencia. Les enorgullece saber que hay un estudiante universitario al que apoyan.

Beca familia Michelini de excelencia académica

La familia Michelini residió en South Lincoln Avenue de 1959 a 2015. Sus cinco hijos asistieron a las escuelas de East Aurora School District 131 (Bardwell, Krug, Waldo y a East Aurora High School). Los Michelini tienen cinco hijos: Thomas clase del 72, Marie Lynn clase del 73, Mark clase del 77, Lisa clase del 80, y Tina clase del 90.

Los Michelini crearon este fondo de becas en 2022 para celebrar la excelente educación que recibieron sus hijos en el East Aurora School District 131. Uno de los logros de los que Dick y Marilyn se enorgullecen más fue haber tenido la fortuna de enviar a sus cinco hijos a la universidad. Toda la familia está sumamente complacida de añadir a otro estudiante a la lista de familiares y amigos que nuestros padres han apoyado en este camino.

Beca Vocacional Dick’s Mini Donuts

Richard “Dick” Schindel se graduó de East High School en 1966 y de University of Illinois. Dedicó toda su carrera professional, de 1970 a 2005, a la docencia. Comenzó a impartir clases en Dist. 131 en 1973 y en East High School en 1979. En 1986 se convirtió en director del departamento de educación empresarial, fue entrenador principal de fútbol americano y sóftbol, y entrenador de béisbol en categorías inferiores.

El Sr. Schindel siempre ha participado en actividades y organizaciones comunitarias que ayudan a quienes lo necesitan. Como propietario de la pequeña empresa Dick’s Mini Donuts, LLC, fundada en 1996, ha ayudado a escuelas y organizaciones a recaudar fondos para proyectos esenciales. El Sr. Schindel cree que esta beca es otra forma de financiar proyectos que beneficien al bien común.

Beca Vocacional Chris and Diamanto Mesiacos

La Beca Vocacional Chris y Diamanto Mesiacos se estableció gracias a la generosidad de su hijo, concejal de Aurora Ted Mesiacos, para honrar la memoria de sus padres, sus abundantes éxitos y su creencia de que la vida es un llamado más allá de uno mismo.

En busca del sueño americano, Chris Mesiacos dejó Grecia y se mudó a Estados Unidos en 1956. Se casó con Diamanto en 1960 y estableció una amorosa familia de tres hijos en Aurora. Chris trabajó como maquinista durante 32 años y diamanto como costurera en Aurora durante dos décadas. Dedicaron incontables horas de voluntariado a apoyar a su iglesia y comunidad local, dando ejemplo a sus hijos sobre la importancia de la solidaridad y ayudando a familias inmigrantes a encontrar trabajo y vivienda.

Nacido y criado en el East Side y graduado de East Aurora, Mesiacos se dio cuenta de la importancia que tuvieron los oficios en su crecimiento y éxito como esposo, padre, arquitecto y servidor público.

Es un honor para la AEEF apoyar a los Mesiaco con esta beca. Esta beca está patrocinada por Ted y su esposa, Kate, quienes participan activamente en la comunidad de Aurora.

Beca Mario and Shirley Fazio para excelencia académica

El Sr. Rich y la Sra. Margie Fazio han establecido la Beca de Excelencia académica de Mario y Shirley Fazio en homenaje a los padres del Sr. Rich.

Mario y Shirley Fazio se casaron cuando Mario regresó de su servició en la Marina de los Estados Unidos después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Trabajó como lechero durante más de 30 años y luego comenzó una exitosa carrera en el sector inmobiliario. “Mi Papá fue un hombre que prosperó gracias a su esfuerzo y nunca se dio por vencido ante un desafió”, recuerda Rich. “También fue voluntario con los Boy Scouts, comités de iglesia y el Club de Leones local”. Tras ganar el concurso de bailes de salón Harvest Moon de 1956, Shirley y Mario fundaron una escuela de baile. Shirley era voluntario como maestra de escuela dominical, madre de grupo y en numerosos programas escolares. Posteriormente, se postuló para un cargo público y se convirtió en miembro de la junta de planificación urbana, fideicomisaria municipal y presidenta de una organización política de mujeres.

Rich Fazio recuerda que sus padres “siempre fueron generosos con su tiempo y dinero. Creían que, si se les daba la oportunidad, las personas trabajadoras podían lograr grandes cosas”. Los Fazio esperan que el becario utilice su espíritu emprendedor para generar un impacto positivo en la comunidad.

Tres generaciones y cien años después, la familia Thiesen y Malcor se han convertido en dos de las empresas más respetadas de la industria de techos en los suburbios del oeste de Chicago. Malcor Roofing of Illinois, Inc. ofrece servicios de reparación y techado profesionales y de calidad y se especializa en techos monocapa, compuestos y modificados para edificios industriales y comerciales.

Hoy, con más de 35 años de experiencia en el sector, Scott Thiesen, propietario de tercera generación, continúa con el compromiso familiar de cultivar relaciones de calidad con las comunidades y las clientelas locales. Esta trayectoria de dedicación al servicio al cliente y la calidad le ha ganado a Malcor el respeto que genera constantemente clientelas fieles y de por vida.
