Last night, East Aurora School District 131 officials learned that the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged O’Donnell Elementary School Principal Matt Willigman with a misdemeanor crime for failing to contact a state agency to investigate abuse allegations pursuant to his mandated reporting duties. The allegations were ultimately reported to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) and deemed unfounded.

The District has and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement in their investigation of this matter. Mr. Willigman has been placed on administrative leave as the District also conducts its own internal investigation. If warranted by the results of this internal investigation, we will not hesitate to take appropriate disciplinary action, potentially including termination.

Until further notice, Ms. Henry will be stepping in as interim principal of O’Donnell School. Both Beatrice Reyes-Childress, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services and Araceli Ordaz, Director of Elementary Schools will make frequent visits to O’Donnell to support Ms. Henry in providing a positive, productive teaching and learning environment for our students and staff.

We understand that this news is concerning—particularly in light of an unrelated incident earlier this week in which a first-grade teacher at Bardwell Elementary school was placed on administrative leave under similar circumstances.

The safety and security of our schools and students must always be our top priority. All District staff members are mandated reporters to DCFS. This is a responsibility that is consistently emphasized both at the time of initial employment and again on a regular basis through required training for all District staff that has been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education.

In light of recent events, I am directing all District administrators and department staff to complete in the next week the DCFS online training for mandated reporters as a reminder of the importance of fulfilling our obligations to speak up whenever there is reasonable cause to believe a child has been abused. We are also working to provide additional training on mandated reporting responsibilities for all District employees, including our teachers, maintenance, office and support staff.
