Thirty-seven East Aurora seniors have been named 2026 Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission — a merit-based honor recognizing the state’s top graduating seniors.

When students got the news, the reaction wasn’t what you might expect. Several described feeling confused, even caught off guard. Angel Nunez called it “a nice reminder that my efforts are not going unnoticed.” Lilia Deltoro said it eased something she’d been carrying quietly: “There’s always that little bit of self doubt, but this award helps ease that feeling.”

What stands out across their responses isn’t the achievement itself — it’s who they give credit to. Angel Camacho and Lilia Deltoro both pointed immediately to their mothers. Angel Nunez credited his parents directly: “Their sacrifices have allowed me to get to this point.” Edgar Cantu Salas thanked his mom, his dad, his girlfriend, and his friends — the people who he said “kept me on the straight and narrow.”

Teachers were named just as personally. Dariana Valerio reflected on every educator she encountered at East Aurora: “Each of them not only had good character, which is rare to come across, but also showed me how to persevere and helped me become the person I am now.” One scholar gave particular recognition to the East Aurora band program and its directors — Liska, Damore, Kulick, and Naffier — crediting them with building “an amazing program and community of kids that have truly shaped who I am leaving this school.”

East Aurora congratulates all 37 scholars, and the families, teachers, and mentors who helped them get there.

Treinta y siete estudiantes de último año de East Aurora han sido nombrados Illinois State Scholars 2026 por la Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), un reconocimiento basado en el mérito que distingue a los mejores estudiantes graduandos del estado.

Cuando los estudiantes recibieron la noticia, la reacción no fue lo que muchos esperarían. Varios describieron sentirse confundidos, incluso tomados por sorpresa. Angel Nunez lo llamó “un buen recordatorio de que mis esfuerzos no están pasando desapercibidos.” Lilia Deltoro dijo que le ayudó a aliviar algo que había estado sintiendo en silencio: “Siempre existe un poquito de duda sobre uno mismo, pero este premio ayuda a aliviar ese sentimiento.”

Lo que más destaca en sus respuestas no es el logro en sí, sino a quiénes dan el crédito. Varios estudiantes, incluido Angel Camacho, señalaron de inmediato a sus madres. Angel Nunez también reconoció a sus padres, diciendo: “Sus sacrificios me han permitido llegar hasta este punto.” Edgar Cantu Salas agradeció a su mamá, a su papá y a sus amigos, las personas que, según él, “me mantuvieron en el buen camino.”

Los maestros también fueron mencionados de manera muy personal. Dariana Valerio reflexionó sobre cada educador que encontró en East Aurora: “Cada uno de ellos no solo tenía un gran carácter, algo raro de encontrar, sino que también me mostraron cómo perseverar y me ayudaron a convertirme en la persona que soy ahora.”

Uno de los estudiantes reconocidos también dio un agradecimiento especial al programa de banda de East Aurora y a sus directores, Liska, Damore, Kulick y Naffier, a quienes atribuyó haber construido “un programa increíble y una comunidad de estudiantes que realmente han formado quién soy al salir de esta escuela.”
