Magnet student qualifies for national History BeeMagnet student qualifies for national History Bee

Sixth grader Melanie Galindo at Fred Rodgers Magnet Academy has qualified to compete at the National History Bee.

Her achievement comes after 16 students from District 131 competed in the regional History Bee finals at Fenton High School on March 28.

The history bee is a grade-level history quiz competition for students. Regional finals are held between February and April in cities across the country, as students participate in a fast-paced and interactive buzzer format to determine regional champions and national qualifiers.

Students competed against each other in three categories, elementary, 7th grade, or 8th grade. Each student participated in three rounds of competition: a multiple-choice history quiz, a buzzer round, and a second buzzer round.

Many students also elected to participate in an additional geography assessment that determined their eligibility for the National Geography Olympiad competition. While students are still awaiting results, it is anticipated that several students qualified to compete at the national level in this area as well.

After each round of competition, an awards ceremony was held to recognize all students, including Galindo, who qualified for the National History Bee.

The National History Bee will be held on June 1 & 2 in Atlanta. The National Geography Olympiad will also be held at that time.

District 131 participated in both the classroom and regional competitions thanks to a grant from Academic Competition Enterprises (ACE), who covered the registration fee for each school to participate.

We are also grateful to Jimmy John’s, who donated water to go along with student dinners.

A big thank you also to the District 131 Social Studies Curriculum Council, Ms. Cynthia Martinez from Fred Rodgers Magnet Academy, and Ms. Amy Maldonado of Cowherd Middle School, for sponsoring the event and practice rounds to prepare students for the regional competition.
