For East High School junior Lesly Mendoza, her hard work during the pandemic has paid off, big time.

Mendoza was recently elected to the state officer team for the Illinois Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

Mendoza was one of six individuals from across the state elected to serve. The officer team will serve for the next school year will represent nearly 3,000 FCCLA members statewide.

Mendoza considers the position a tremendous accomplishment, and believes her hard work has paid off. “I never really thought I had a chance to win, but actually I did try super hard and when things got hard, like managing my schedule … I didn’t give up.”

Mendoza believes the experience she will gain from being an officer will provide her with more confidence with whatever she decides to do in her future. “I am currently undecided with what I want to major in, so maybe being a part of this team will help me find a passion.”

The newly-elected team has been holding virtual meetings and training sessions since their election on May 18. Depending on the pandemic status, state officers, along with their chapter advisers, will attend a three-day training in Springfield this August. The face-to-face training will include instruction on public speaking, parliamentary procedure, and team-building activities.

Kristin Doucette, an East High School F.A.C.S. Teacher and FCCLA Adviser, was elated to learn that Lesly was elected.

“Lesly has been working hard since fall to be elected to the state officer position. She was also elected secretary to our FCCLA chapter 2019-2020 school year,” said Doucette.

Doucette said that Mendoza took on additional responsibility other than her position, helping to recruit additional members, develop brochures, and help mentor new FCCLA students. When the pandemic hit, Mendoza was able to change her campaign from an in-person to online, without any help.

“Lesly is the one of the first students I thought would be capable of maintaining the responsibilities of a state officer position while still excelling at East,” said Doucette. “I know she will excel in this position and represent East High to the best of her abilities.”

As part of the state officer team, Mendoza will attend the Virtual FCCLA National Leadership Conference July 7-9. During the virtual conference, state officers will represent Illinois as voting delegates, attend general sessions, and sessions concerning today’s youth issues. Members of the Illinois officer team will also network with other state officers from across the country. The team will attend a virtual seminar for Illinois Career & Technical Organization State Officers on July 22-24, which will focus on advocacy and how to promote career and technical education.

Because Illinois Association of FCCLA is a youth-led organization, state officers are responsible for planning and implementing all the state-sponsored events and conferences that take place during the school year.

East Aurora has a strong legacy with FCCLA. The East Aurora chapter had state officers consecutively from the 1992-93 school year through the 1996-97 school year, and then again in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Mendoza is the first state officer from East High since the 2001-02 school year.

Para Lesly Mendoza, estudiante de tercer año de East High School, su arduo trabajo durante la pandemia, ha valido la pena a lo grande.

La estudiante de East High School, Lesly Mendoza, fue elegida recientemente, para el equipo de oficiales estatales de la Asociación de Líderes de Familia, Carrera y Comunidad de América, de Illinois (FCCLA).

Mendoza fue una de las seis personas, de todo el estado, elegidas para servir. El equipo de oficiales servirá para el próximo año escolar y representará a casi 3,000 miembros de FCCLA, en todo el estado.

Mendoza considera, que el puesto es un logro tremendo y cree que su arduo trabajo, ha valido la pena. “Nunca pensé, realmente, que tenía la oportunidad de ganar, pero en realidad lo intenté muy duro y cuando las cosas se pusieron difíciles, como por ejemplo manejar mi agenda…no me di por vencida”.

Mendoza cree que la experiencia que obtendrá al ser oficial, le dará más confianza con lo que decida hacer en su futuro. “Actualmente, estoy indecisa con lo que quiero estudiar, así que tal vez, ser parte de este equipo, me ayudará a encontrar una pasión”.

El equipo recién elegido, ha estado celebrando reuniones virtuales y sesiones de capacitación, desde su elección el 18 de Mayo. Dependiendo del estado de la pandemia, los oficiales estatales, junto con sus asesores de grupo, asistirán a una capacitación de tres días en Springfield, este Agosto. La capacitación presencial incluirá, instrucción sobre cómo hablar en público, procedimiento parlamentario y actividades de formación de equipos.

Kristin Doucette, una maestra de F.A.C.S. en la East High School y asesora de FCCLA, se alegró de saber que Lesly fue elegida.

“Lesly ha estado trabajando duro desde el Otoño, para ser elegida para el puesto de oficial de estado. También fue elegida secretaria, para nuestro capítulo escolar FCCLA 2019-2020”, dijo Doucette.

Doucette dijo que Mendoza asumió una responsabilidad adicional, además de su posición, ayudando a reclutar miembros adicionales, desarrollando folletos y ayudando a guiar a nuevos estudiantes, de FCCLA. Cuando llegó la pandemia, Mendoza pudo cambiar su campaña de presencial a en línea, sin ninguna ayuda.

“Lesly es uno de las primeras estudiantes, que pensé sería capaz de mantener las responsabilidades, de un puesto de oficial de estado, sin dejar de sobresalir en East High”, dijo Doucette. “Sé que sobresaldrá en esta posición y representará al East High, lo mejor que pueda”.

Como parte del equipo de oficiales estatales, Mendoza asistirá a la Conferencia de Liderazgo Nacional Virtual FCCLA, del 7 al 9 de Julio. Durante la conferencia virtual, los oficiales estatales representarán a Illinois como delegados, con derecho a voto, asistirán a sesiones generales y sesiones relacionadas, con los temas juveniles de hoy. Los miembros del equipo de oficiales de Illinois, también se conectarán con otros oficiales estatales de todo el país. El equipo asistirá a un seminario virtual, para funcionarios estatales de la Organización Técnica y de Carreras de Illinois, del 22 al 24 de Julio, que se centrará en la promoción y en cómo promover la educación profesional y técnica.

Debido a que la Asociación de Illinois de FCCLA, es una organización dirigida por jóvenes, los oficiales estatales son responsables de planificar e implementar todos los eventos y conferencias patrocinados por el estado, que tienen lugar durante el año escolar.

East Aurora tiene un fuerte legado con FCCLA. El equipo de East Aurora, tuvo oficiales estatales consecutivamente, desde el año escolar 1992-93 hasta el año escolar 1996-97, y luego nuevamente, en 2000-01 y 2001-02.
