Rep Hernandez Hosts Assembly at EAHSEl representante Hernández organiza una asamblea en EAHS

In response to a growing spirit of activism amongst American High School students in general, and East Aurora students in particular, a special assembly was held at East Aurora High School on Thursday, February 12. East Aurora alumna, and current Illinois State Representative, Barbara Hernandez, was welcomed by District 31 Superintendent, Robert Halverson, as the guest speaker for the assembly. 

Hernandez, who first assumed office in 2019 as the youngest member of the Illinois legislature, after her tenure as the youngest member of the Kane County Board, has remained a fierce advocate for her community and the needs of immigrant families and first generation students. During 7th period teachers of Junior and Senior students were given the option of bringing their classes to the Hawks Auditorium. Students themselves could choose to opt out ans tay in class if they so desired. In 8th period Freshmen and Sophomore students and their teachers were given the same options. 

Throughout the course of the assembly, Hernandez focused her talk on the importance of responsible civic engagement. She praised East Aurora students for their passion, while encouraging them to be thoughtful about safety and public comportment, so that their message would not be lost to distraction. Hernandez also gave the students opportunities to ask questions and have their voices heard, as EAHS administrators walked around the space with microphones for students that wanted to speak. The event overall was deemed a success, particularly the upperclassmen session. Kelly Henkel, Division Chair for World Cultures, said of the event, “I was so proud of our kids. They asked great questions, were civically engaged, and truly expressed their passion that inspires their activism.”

En respuesta al creciente activismo entre los estudiantes de preparatoria estadounidenses en general, y de East Aurora en particular, se celebró una asamblea especial en la Preparatoria East Aurora el jueves 12 de febrero. La exalumna de East Aurora y actual Representante Estatal de Illinois, Barbara Hernandez, fue recibida por el Superintendente del Distrito 31, Robert Halverson, como oradora invitada.

Hernandez, quien asumió el cargo en 2019 como la miembro más joven de la legislatura de Illinois, tras su paso por la Junta del Condado de Kane, se ha mantenido como una firme defensora de su comunidad y de las necesidades de las familias inmigrantes y los estudiantes de primera generación. Durante el séptimo periodo, los profesores de estudiantes de penúltimo y último año tuvieron la opción de llevar sus clases al Auditorio Hawks. Los propios estudiantes podían optar por no asistir y quedarse en clase si así lo deseaban. En el octavo periodo, los estudiantes de primer y segundo año y sus profesores tuvieron las mismas opciones.

A lo largo de la asamblea, Hernandez centró su discurso en la importancia de la participación cívica responsable. Elogió a los estudiantes de East Aurora por su pasión, a la vez que los animó a ser considerados con la seguridad y el comportamiento público, para que su mensaje no se perdiera. Hernández también les dio la oportunidad de hacer preguntas y hacerse oír, mientras los administradores de EAHS recorrían el espacio con micrófonos para los estudiantes que deseaban hablar. El evento en general fue un éxito, en particular la sesión de los estudiantes de último año. Kelly Henkel, Jefa de la División de Culturas del Mundo, comentó sobre el evento: “Me sentí muy orgullosa de nuestros estudiantes. Hicieron excelentes preguntas, se involucraron cívicamente y expresaron con sinceridad la pasión que inspira su activismo”.
