Simmons Writer, Crystal Fabela Wins!Simmons Writer, Crystal Fabela Wins!

CF Winner
Crystal Fabela, 7th Grader in ELA Honors at Simmons Middle School has been named the 1st Place Winner for the 7th Grade in the Aurora Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. Simmons is so proud of her!

This opportunity came from Simmons Middle School principal Ms. Patterson who passed it on Crystal’s ELA teacher, Ms. Andres. Of the five students Ms. Andres recruited, Crystal was the only one that submitted an essay. She worked on it at home and after school to complete, and submitted her entry before Thanksgiving.

2017 marked the 100th anniversary of WWI, and the assignment was to write an essay coming from the point of view of someone who had lived at that time, highlighting the changes that happened after the war. Crystal’s entry was a creative story focused on the loss families experienced and the changing opportunities for women in society from more traditional roles to working outside the home. This social change began when women were needed to enter the workforce during WWI, to keep the economy robust, when many men were away fighting.

There will be a reception February 11 at 1 p.m. at the Oswego Public Library, Montgomery Campus, 1111 Reading Drive, Montgomery.

Some quotes from Crystal:

How do you feel about winning?  “Proud, excited!”

What have you done to improve and hone your writing skills? “Writing everyday. I keep journals. That helps me express my feelings and I get practice writing.”

What advice do have for other students for students? “Take a chance you never know what might happen.”

What an honor … we are so proud of you Crystal!
