Daily Update for Tuesday, March 17thDaily Update for Tuesday, March 17th

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Guys and Gals,

Today’s update is a LONG one.  I promise they won’t all be this long!

Sorry, if I’m a little late with posting here on my webpage for those who have been checking.  Yesterday was a crazy day.  Here in California we are being asked to “Shelter in Place” like we would for an intruder drill!  I had to go grocery shopping to pick up essentials to get us through.  It was a crazy – shelves were empty and lines were sooooo long.  Glad that is over with.  Also, keep in mind that here in California, I am 2 hours later than Illinois.  For you it is 1:00 in the afternoon, but for me, it is only 11:00.

Plans are constantly changing!  I was going to have you do the work you took home, but it seems most teachers are not requiring that, so . . .

While you’re off, it’s recommended that you read at least 30 minutes a day! I have posted some links where you can find some free books online. I have also posted some recommended books from high school students. I have also posted my personal list of recommendations. Try to read at least 30 minutes a day to keep that mind fresh!

~ https://books.google.com/ (If you have a specific book in mind.)

~ http://www.read.gov/books/ (A bunch of classics.)

~ https://openlibrary.org/ (Broken down more by genre. I love this site, personally!)

~ https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page (A lot of classics and others to download, but you’ll have to do some digging.)

~ https://www.smashwords.com/ (Be sure to click the “free” option when browsing.)

*List of Popular Books Amongst High School Students*
~Everything, Everything
~It’s Kind of a Funny Story (Loved this as well!)
~The Hate U Give
~Born a Crime (Also a great one!)

*Some of my Recent Favorites*
~Perks of Being a Wallflower
~Speak
~Where the Crawdads Sing
~The Nightengale
~Before We Were Yours
~Children of Blood and Bone (I am currently reading the sequel – Children of Vice and Virtue)

I will also share with you some fun short stories.  You may absolutely read The Things They Carried if you were present in class last Friday and got a copy.  If you did not – no worries – we will reread key chapters together when we get back.  Just do some sort of reading!

I will also set up some grammar exercises to keep you on top of your grammar game at NoRedInk.com.  Here are your class codes to log in:

Period 1: lucky dog 72
Period 3: smart chicken 57
Period 5: jazzy knot 16
Period 6: tidy salsa 19

Another great way to practice vocabulary is Freerice.com.  On this website you are asked vocabulary questions and for each answer you get correct, a grain of rice is donated to starving people in other parts of the world.  You can practice vocab AND feel good about doing something for others!

In a notebook, keep track of what you have done for English class each day, whether it is reading, NoRedInk, Freerice or all of the above.  For example:
Tuesday, 3/17:  30 minutes reading
Wednesday, 3/18:  30 minutes reading, 10 minutes Freerice.com
Thursday, 3/19:  30 minutes NoRedInk.com
Etc.

In these uncertain times, if you are feeling overwhelmed – take a break.  It is still safe to go outside and take a walk as long as you remember to socially distance yourself.  Fresh air is always a good way to calm your nerves.  Limiting screen time can also help – especially while you are feeling anxious.  I usually watch 2 or 3 news programs a day, but I am currently limiting myself to once a day, so that I do not feel overwhelmed or depressed about all the information and the state of the world.

Finally, and most importantly, if you ever need to, feel free to email me.  Whether you have a question, a concern, or just want to say hi.  I love hearing from you while we can’t be together, so send me a note anytime.  I’m here for you, always.

Be safe and healthy,
Mrs. Manzella
