What is the Seal of Biliteracy? 

biliteracy sealThe Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy is an award bestowed by the Illinois State Board of Education and given by District 131 in recognition of students who have attained a high level of proficiency in one or more language in addition to English by high school graduation. The state of Illinois officially adopted the Seal of Biliteracy in 2013; District 131 first participated in the program in 2016. The Seal is affixed to the student’s diploma.

What is the Commendation toward Biliteracy?

The Commendation toward Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language.

 Why should a student want to earn the Seal of Biliteracy? 

Our vision is that our future graduates will be confident and productive global citizens, committed to improving their community. We recognize the importance of language and how it helps prepare students for global citizenship. Not only is learning a language beneficial to students’ cognitive development, it also provides opportunities for them to participate effectively in global political, social, cultural, and economic contexts. The demand for employees to be fluent in more than one language is increasing rapidly at home and throughout the world. The Seal of Biliteracy builds upon the rich linguistic and cultural assets of the district and community, providing students with the necessary skills to be successful in college, career, and life.

The Seal marks the attainment of student proficiency in two or more languages.  The Seal is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and college admissions, thus making a student a more appealing candidate for admissions and future employment.

Benefits include earning two years of foreign language credit at any Illinois public university. By law, Illinois public universities will accept the State Seal of Biliteracy as an equivalent of two (2) years of foreign language coursework taken during high school if a student’s high school transcript indicates that he or she received the State Seal of Biliteracy. Many universities waive any foreign language requirements and/or grant course credit for students who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy.

How can a student earn the Seal or Commendation of Biliteracy?

Students earn the Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in two or more languages.  Registration is now open for East Aurora High School students to take the AAPPL assessment toward the Seal of Biliteracy. Students may register through Wednesday, February 28, 2024 and testing will take place during the month of March. Students have the option to take the AAPPL test after school at East High, or remotely on their laptops at home. The following combination of tests/exams can be used to demonstrate proficiency:

Who can earn the Seal of Biliteracy?

Any student is eligible to earn the Seal if he/she can demonstrate proficiency in two or more languages. The languages the District can test include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

How can students prepare for the test?

Students have the opportunity to practice the AAPPL test prior to their assigned testing date. The practice test contains fewer questions than the official test, but questions design mirrors the official AAPPL exam. Practice tests are not scored or recorded and, therefore, will not affect students’ reported score. Early exposure to the test design and sample questions, however, helps students gain experience and confidence in using the testing tools, such as headphones, computer microphones, and keyboards. How and when can students take the test?

Students have multiple opportunities to assess their proficiency in World Languages. The cost for taking the test is covered by the District. The first opportunity for East Aurora High School students to take the AAPPL test will be in the fall. Students may register for the AAPPL test by clicking on the link at the top of this page. 

Students can take the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) tests up to (2) two times per year. For the AP Test, students register by November 14th through their Advanced Placement Language class.

More information regarding the AAPPL exam will be available closer to the testing dates.

To demonstrate their English proficiency, students can take the ACCESS 2.0 or SAT. All English Learners take the ACCESS 2.0 once per year and must achieve proficiency while enrolled in high school. All Juniors will take the SAT.

biliteracy sealEl Sello de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas es un premio otorgado por la Junta del Estado de Illinois y otorgado por el Distrito 131 en reconocimiento a los estudiantes que han alcanzado un alto nivel de competencia en uno o más idiomas además del inglés al graduarse de la escuela secundaria.

El estado de Illinois adopto oficialmente el Sello de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas en el 2013; El Distrito 131 participo por primera vez en el programa en el 2016. El Sello se adhiere al diploma del estudiante.

¿Qué es la Mención hacia la Lectoescritura en dos idiomas?

La mención hacia la Lectoescritura en dos idiomas es un reconocimiento otorgado por el distrito escolar a los estudiantes que han demostrado un progreso significativo hacia el logro de un alto nivel de competencia en inglés y en lectura, comprensión auditiva y expresión oral en otro idioma.

 ¿Por qué un estudiante debería adquirir el Sello de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas? 

Nuestra visión es que nuestros futuros graduados serán ciudadanos globales, comprometidos a mejorar su comunidad. Reconocemos la importancia del lenguaje y como ayuda a preparar a los estudiantes para la ciudadanía global.

Aprender un idioma no solo es beneficioso para el desarrollo cognitivo de los estudiantes, sino que también les brinda la oportunidad de participar de manera efectiva en contextos políticos, sociales, culturales y económicos globales. La demanda de empleados con fluidez en más de un idioma está aumentando rápidamente en el hogar y en todo el mundo. El Sello de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas se basa en los ricos recursos lingüísticos y culturales del distrito y la comunidad, proporcionando a los estudiantes las habilidades necesarias para tener éxito en la universidad, la profesión y la vida.

El Sello marca el logro de aptitud del estudiante en dos o más idiomas. El Sello es una declaración de cumplimiento, lo cual logra que el estudiante sea un candidato más recomendable para la admisión universitaria y un futuro empleo.

Por ley, las universidades públicas de Illinois aceptaran el Sello Estatal de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas como un equivalente de dos (2) años de cursos de idiomas extranjeros tomados durante la escuela secundaria si la transcripción de la escuela secundaria de un estudiante indica que recibió el Sello Estatal de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas. Muchas universidades dan exenciones de cualquier requisito de idioma extranjero y/o otorgan créditos de cursos para estudiantes que han obtenido el Sello de Lectoescritura en dos idiomas.

¿Cómo y cuándo pueden los estudiantes tomar el examen del Sello o Mención hacia la Lectoescritura en dos idiomas?

Los estudiantes tienen múltiples oportunidades para evaluar su aptitud en idiomas mundiales e inglés. La registración está abierta para que los estudiantes de East Aurora High School tomen la evaluación AAPPL para obtener el Sello de Alfabetización Bilingüe. Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse hasta el miercoles, 28 de febrero de 2024 y la prueba se llevará a cabo en marzo. Los estudiantes tienen la opción de tomar la prueba AAPPL después de la escuela en East High, o de forma remota en sus computadoras portátiles en casa. El costo de las pruebas es cubierto por el Distrito. La siguiente combinación de exámenes se puede utilizar para demostrar aptitud:

¿Quién puede ganar el Sello de Biliteracy?

Cualquier estudiante es elegible para ganar el Sello si él / ella puede demostrar dominio en dos o más idiomas. Los idiomas que el Distrito puede evaluar incluyen árabe, chino, inglés, francés, alemán, latín, portugués, ruso y español.

¿Cómo pueden prepararse los estudiantes para el examen?

Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de practicar el examen AAPPL antes de la fecha de examen asignada. El examen de práctica contiene menos preguntas que el examen oficial, pero el diseño de las preguntas refleja el examen oficial AAPPL. Las pruebas de práctica no se califican ni se registran y, por lo tanto, no afectarán la calificación informada por los estudiantes. Sin embargo, la exposición temprana al diseño de la prueba y las preguntas de muestra ayuda a los estudiantes a adquirir experiencia y confianza en el uso de las herramientas de prueba, como auriculares, micrófonos y teclados. ¿Cómo y cuándo pueden los estudiantes tomar el examen?

Los estudiantes tienen múltiples oportunidades para evaluar su competencia en idiomas del mundo. El costo para tomar el examen está cubierto por el Distrito. La primera oportunidad para que los estudiantes de East Aurora High School tomen el examen AAPPL será en otoño. Los estudiantes pueden registrarse para la prueba AAPPL haciendo clic en el enlace en la parte superior de esta página.

Los estudiantes pueden tomar las evaluaciones de evaluación del desempeño hacia la competencia en idiomas (AAPPL) hasta (2) dos veces al año. Para la Prueba AP, los estudiantes se registran antes del 14 de noviembre a través de su clase de Lenguaje de Colocación Avanzada.

Para demostrar su dominio del inglés, los estudiantes pueden tomar ACCESS 2.0 o SAT. Todos los aprendices de inglés toman el ACCESS 2.0 una vez al año y deben alcanzar el dominio mientras están matriculados en la escuela secundaria. Todos los Junior tomarán el SAT.
