Frequent Asked Questions from Parents

What if the bus is late?

If the bus is not on time, continue to wait for 10 minutes longer. (example: continue to wait until 8:10 a.m. for an 8 a.m. pick up time.)

If the bus does not arrive within 10 minutes after pick up time, call First Student Bus Dispatch Office at (630) 406-0700.

What if my student left an item on the bus?

 For items left on bus, contact First Student Bus Dispatch Office at (630) 406-0700.

If I am not eligible for transportation, can I sign up to receive transportation services?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer transportation services for students who do not qualify.

My child goes to daycare before or after school, can the bus provide transportation to the daycare?

Currently, transportation services are for students to and from their home address. The District has not put into place an option to service daycare provisions.

If we get enough signatures, can we petition the District to get more buses?

The District transportation service costs are based on the transportation reimbursement eligibility standards as prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education. Contracting private transportation services may be at the discretion of individual households.

Can my child ride a bus to another student’s home?

Transportation is provided for students assigned to a specific route therefore, we cannot allow students to ride a bus they are not registered to ride.

Do you I have to report to the bus driver if my child will not be riding the bus?

There is no expectation or requirement that parents report to the bus driver if the child will not be riding the bus for a specific reason or day. If the child will no longer be riding the bus at any time, we recommend contacting the transportation office, (630) 299-5594.

On Late Start Tuesdays, what time will the bus come?

School start times are 1 hour later therefore, your child’s bus should arrive one hour later than the schedule during the remainder of the week.

Why didn’t I receive a transportation letter?

All eligible students who live more than 1.5 miles from their home school should have received a transportation letter. If you believe you live more than 1.5 miles from your child’s school, please contact the transportation office, (630) 299-5594, leave your child’s name and your telephone number so we can research the matter.

Why doesn’t my child get transportation?

The distance from your home address to the child’s home school of attendance has to be more than 1.5 miles to qualify for transportation.

Is there a bus assistant on my child’s bus?

Our buses at Benavides STEAM Academy along with Preschool buses have bus monitors. We do not have bus assistants at this time for other schools. We will monitor the environment on the buses between the school principals and bus drivers.

Are there video cameras on the bus?

Yes, our school buses will have video cameras that will be available for our principals to review in their investigation to reports of incidents occurring on the school bus. These clips are very helpful but, may not be able to provide complete details of the incident. Therefore, our principals will also need student reports to ensure and maintain that everyone has a safe bus ride to and from school.

What happens if there is a fight on the bus?

The bus driver will report the incident to the school principal for investigation. If your child witnesses a fight on the bus, we encourage them to report what they saw to the school principal.

What happens if my child is bullied on the bus?

The child should report the situation to the bus driver, school principal, or the parent so the matter can be researched.

Why aren’t there seat belts on the school bus?

School buses are larger in size and weight and are not required by federal motor vehicle safety standards to have seatbelts. According to manufactured standards, school buses are designed with compartmentalization construction to keep children safe.

Why is the bus stop not in front of my home?

District 131 setup bus stops that would enable students and parents to walk within a focused 15 minute walk, whenever possible. Many streets in the district are narrow and difficult for simultaneous school bus and traffic access and driving ability.

How will my child know when to get off the bus?

The child should practice walking from their home to the bus stop so, the child can become familiar with the area. Our bus drivers will have a list of students at each bus stop to help them.

What happens if my child is afraid to get off the bus?

Bus drivers would not force any child to get off the bus. If the child is afraid, the bus driver will contact dispatch to inform the school and return the child to their school and the principal will contact you.

Will the bus drop off my Pre-School or Kindergarten child if no one is there?

Parents are required to be at the bus stop for Kindergarten and Preschool students. You should be at the bus stop 10 minutes earlier in the afternoon to be prepared to meet your child. Otherwise, the bus driver will take the child back to the school and the principal will contact you.

Will the bus drop off my First Grade through Twelfth Grade child if no one is there?

All other children will be permitted to get off the bus without an adult present at the bus stop.

How will I know if it is the right bus?

Bus drivers should have a sign in the front window with the bus route identification to match your transportation letter. You can always check with the bus driver.

What does the bus company do to ensure my child’s safety?

Bus drivers have been fingerprinted and undergone a background check before starting the training program. The bus company has approved trainers to insure each person is competent to safely operate the school bus.

Can I ride the bus with my child?

We are unable to permit parents or adults to ride the school bus. Parents should reassure their children that the bus driver will ensure a safe ride. We will have adults meet the school buses at the school site to help the children when they arrive.

Mi hijo va a la guardería antes o después de la escuela, ¿puede el autobús proporcionar transporte a la guardería?

En la actualidad, los servicios de transporte son para los estudiantes desde y hacia su domicilio. El Distrito no ha puesto en marcha una opción para atender las provisiones de guarderías.

Si tenemos suficientes firmas, ¿podemos pedir al distrito que obtenga más autobuses?

Los costos del servicio de transporte del distrito se basan en los estándares de elegibilidad de reembolso de transporte según lo prescrito por la Junta de Educación del Estado de Illinois. Contratación de servicios de transporte privado puede ser a discreción de los hogares individuales.

¿Puede mi hijo ir en autobús a la casa de otro estudiante?

En los martes de inicio tardío, ¿a qué hora vendrá el autobús?

Los horarios de inicio tardío de las escuelas son de 1 hora más tarde, por lo tanto el autobús de su niño(a) debe llegar una hora más tarde que el horario durante el resto de la semana.

¿Por qué no recibí una carta de transporte?

Todos los estudiantes elegibles que viven a más de una milla y media de su escuela correspondiente deben haber recibido una carta de transporte. Si usted cree que usted vive a más de una milla y media de la escuela de su hijo, por favor contacte a la oficina de transporte al (630) 299-5594, deje el nombre de su hijo y su número de teléfono para que podamos investigar el asunto más a fondo.

¿Por qué mi hijo(a) no recibe transporte?

Monitorizaremos el ambiente en los autobuses entre los directores de las escuelas y los conductores de autobuses.

¿Hay cámaras de video en el autobús?

Sí, nuestros autobuses escolares tendrán cámaras de video que estarán disponibles para que nuestros directores(as) revisen en su investigación a los reportes de incidentes ocurridos en el autobús escolar. Estos clips son muy útiles pero pueden no ser capaces de proporcionar detalles completos del incidente. Por lo tanto, nuestros directores(as) también necesitarán reportes de estudiantes para asegurar y mantener que todos tienen un viaje en autobús seguro hacia y desde la escuela.

¿Qué pasa si hay una pelea en el autobús?

El conductor del autobús reportará el incidente al director(a) de la escuela para una investigación. Si su hijo(a) es testigo de una pelea en el autobús, les recomendamos informar lo que vieron al director(a) de la escuela.

¿Qué sucede si mi niño es intimidado en el autobús?

El/la niño(a) debe reportar la situación al conductor del autobús, al(a) director(a) de la escuela o a los padres para que se pueda investigar el asunto.

¿Por qué no hay cinturones de seguridad en el autobús escolar?

Los autobuses escolares son más grandes en tamaño y peso y no son requeridos por los estándares federales de seguridad de vehículos motorizados para tener cinturones de seguridad. Según los estándares manufacturados, los autobuses escolares están diseñados con una construcción compartimentada para mantener a los niños seguros.

¿Por qué la parada de autobús no esta enfrente de mi casa?

El Distrito 131 instalo paradas de autobús que permitirían a los estudiantes y padres caminar dentro de una caminata sin distracciones de 15 minutos, cuando sea posible. Muchas calles en el distrito son estrechas y difíciles para el acceso simultáneo de un autobús escolar y el trafico con poca capacidad de conducción.

¿Cómo sabrá mi hijo cuándo bajar del autobús?

El/la niño(a) debe practicar caminando desde su casa hasta la parada del autobús para que pueda familiarizarse con el área. Nuestros conductores de autobús tendrán una lista de estudiantes en cada parada de autobús para ayudarlos.

¿Qué sucede si mi hijo tiene miedo de bajarse del autobús?

Los conductores de autobús no fuerzan a ningún niño a bajarse del autobús. Si el niño tiene miedo, el conductor del autobus se pondrá en contacto con el despacho para informar a la escuela y regresará al niño a su escuela y el/la director(a) se pondrá en contacto con usted.

¿El autobús dejará a mi hijo de Kindergarten o Preescolar si no hay nadie en la parada?

Se requiere que los padres estén en la parada de autobús para los estudiantes de Kindergarten y Preescolar. Usted debe estar en la parada del autobús 10 minutos antes por la tarde para estar preparado para recojer a su hijo(a). De lo contrario, el conductor del autobús llevará al niño(a) a la escuela y el/la director(a) se pondrá en contacto con usted.

¿El autobús dejará a mi hijo de mi primer grado a doceavo grado si no hay nadie en la parada?

A todos estos niños se les permitirá bajar del autobús sin un adulto presente en la parada del autobús.

¿Cómo sabré si es el autobús correcto?

Los conductores de autobuses deben tener un letrero en la ventana frontal con la identificación de la ruta de autobús para que coincida con su carta de transporte. Siempre puede consultar con el conductor del autobús.

¿Qué hace la compañía de autobuses para asegurar la seguridad de mi hijo?

Los conductores de autobús se han tomado las huellas dactilares y se han sometido a una verificación de antecedentes antes de iniciar el programa de entrenamiento. La compañía de autobuses tiene entrenadores aprovados para asegurar que cada persona es competente para operar el autobús escolar de una manera segura.

¿Puedo viajar en el autobús con mi hijo?

No podemos permitir que padres o adultos tomen el autobús escolar. Los padres deben tranquilizar a sus hijos dejandoles saber que el conductor del autobús asegurará un viaje seguro. Adultos esperaran a los autobuses escolares en la escuela para ayudar a los niños cuando lleguen.
